US Secretary of State Marco Rubio<\/a> has long sought regime change in Cuba<\/a>, and new reporting from Drop Site News<\/em> on Monday suggested he may be intentionally misrepresenting the Trump administration\u2019s current policy in the communist country to achieve his goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The outlet reported that, based on the accounts of five Cuban and US officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, the \u201cdeal\u201d that President Donald Trump<\/a> has said<\/a> is likely to be finalized soon is not being pursued in any high-level, official diplomatic discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuba Condemns Trump Claim That It Poses \u2018Extraordinary Threat\u2019 to US<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Soon after issuing an executive order that labeled<\/a> Cuba an extraordinary threat, accused it of harboring terrorists, and threatened other countries with sanctions<\/a> if they provide oil<\/a> to the Cuban government, Trump said his administration is \u201ctalking to the people from Cuba, the highest people in Cuba, to see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But one senior White House<\/a> official explained to Drop Site<\/em> that \u201che\u2019s saying that because that\u2019s what Marco is telling him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the public and the president himself believe that high-level negotiations are taking place, \u201cin a few weeks or months, Rubio will be able to claim that the talks were futile because of Cuban intransigence,\u201d Drop Site<\/em> reported, asserting that Rubio is \u201cdeliberately\u201d blocking Trump from the talks and misleading him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lie like the one Drop Site<\/em>\u2018s sources alleged, said<\/a> reporter Ryan Grim, \u201cwould be a defining scandal in any other administration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea that talks are taking place has been \u201caccepted as fact\u201d in Washington<\/a>, DC, reported the outlet, which pointed to Politico<\/em>\u2018s recent reporting that said the son of former Cuban President Ra\u00fal Castro traveled to Mexico for talks with the Central Intelligence Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Politico<\/em>\u2018s article was sourced to a Cuban dissident blogger and a \u201csingle, fantastical Facebook post made by a Spain-based Cuban journalist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drop Site <\/em>noted that while Trump is currently threatening<\/a> Cuba\u2019s economy and the lives and livelihoods of millions of people with an oil blockade, having cut off the Venezuelan oil supply to the island after ordering an invasion of the South American country over a month ago, he doesn\u2019t appear to be driven by an \u201cideological confrontation with Cuba\u201d and in fact holds potential financial interests in normalizing relations with the country because he holds a registered trademark for a Trump property in Havana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rubio, whose family immigrated to the US from Cuba before the Cuban Revolution\u2014but didn\u2019t flee Fidel Castro\u2019s takeover as he claimed<\/a> early in his political career\u2014has long called for regime change in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US State Department<\/a> refuted the accounts of Drop Site<\/em>\u2018s five sources and told the outlet that diplomatic talks\u2014which Cuban leaders have said they are entirely open to holding\u2014are taking place, but did not provide evidence or details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs the president stated, we are talking to Cuba, whose leaders should make a deal. Cuba is a failing nation whose rulers have had a major setback with the loss of support from Venezuela<\/a> and with Mexico ceasing to send them oil,\u201d the State Department press office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That claim contradicted a comment<\/a> from Carlos Fernandez de Cossio, Cuba\u2019s deputy minister of foreign affairs, who told CNN<\/em> last week that the government has had \u201csome exchanges of messages\u201d with the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe cannot say we have set a bilateral dialogue at this moment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drop Site News<\/em>\u2019 reporting indicates,\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0Cuban-American organizer and\u00a0New York City<\/a>\u00a0Council candidate Danny Valdes, that \u201cMarco Rubio is personally overseeing the\u00a0starvation<\/a>\u00a0of an entire nation,\u201d while Cuban leaders \u201cwant dialogue and a way forward, without surrendering their sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
