Recent progressive electoral victories have been followed by assurances from centrist Democratic politicians and strategists that such successes can\u2019t be replicated elsewhere, and congressional candidate Analilia Mej\u00eda\u2019s primary win<\/a> this week was no exception\u2014but Sen. Bernie Sanders<\/a> implored voters not to listen to the naysayers who continue to insist that \u201cmoderation\u201d is the key to winning elections for Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emphasizing that Mej\u00eda, a grassroots organizer, was known to just 5% of voters in New Jersey\u2019s 11th Congressional District when she launched her campaign in November, Sanders said Wednesday: \u201cMake no mistake. This can be done everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mej\u00eda ran against 10 other candidates, including former US Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-NJ), in the Democratic primary ahead of the April 16 special election to fill the seat left vacant by Gov. Mikie Sherrill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The progressive candidate was outspent 4-1, said Sanders, but proved unstoppable \u201cbecause she had the courage to stand up for the\u00a0working class<\/a>\u00a0in her area and throughout this country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outspent four to one and starting at just 5% in the polls, Analilia Mej\u00eda won by taking on Trump\u2019s authoritarianism and ICE, and fighting for an economy that works for the working class of this country\u2014not billionaires.
