Nancy Pelosi\u2019s congressional seat shared their views on issues facing the immigrant community on Wednesday evening during a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sflatinodemocrats.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forum organized by the San Francisco Latino Democratic Club<\/a>&nbsp;alongside other groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>District 1 Supervisor Connie Chan and Saikat Chakrabarti, former chief of staff to New York City Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, appeared at Brava Theatre in the Mission District for a debate moderated by Marlen Vasquez, an English professor at City College of San Francisco. The theater was mostly empty, with a crowd of about 70 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Scott Wiener, the third major candidate for Pelosi\u2019s seat, didn\u2019t participate in the forum \u2014 his absence was highlighted by an empty chair on the side of the stage with his name on it and a recorded cricket sound effect whenever Vasquez asked the empty chair a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/newspack-missionlocal.s3.amazonaws.com\/mission\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/021126_MMG_LDC-Congressional-debate-5-819x640.jpg\" alt=\"A stage with four empty chairs, a table with water bottles, and a reserved sign for Senator Scott Wiener; sponsor logos are displayed on a screen in the background.\" class=\"wp-image-834181\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Congressional candidates Connie Chan and Saikat Chakrabarti participated in a debate at the Brava Theater Center, while Senator Scott Weiner missed the debate on Feb. 11, 2026. Photo by Mariana Garcia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Wiener announced in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Scott_Wiener\/status\/2018342901840064855?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Feb. 2 social media post<\/a>&nbsp;that he would not participate in the forum and invited the other candidates to do the same. \u201cI welcome a candidate forum with SF\u2019s Latino community, but not one spearheaded by an org that refused to hold its leader accountable when he was credibly accused of sexual assault,\u201d he wrote, referencing the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2024\/07\/latino-leader-steps-aside-after-allegations-of-sexual-misconduct\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">allegations against Kevin Ortiz<\/a>, who&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/missionlocal.org\/2026\/01\/sf-mission-buzz-latino-democratic-club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recently ended his tenure<\/a>&nbsp;as president of the Latino Democratic Club and is no longer affiliated with the club.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the forum, Chan and Chakrabarti \u2014 both from immigrant families \u2014 emphasized their support for the Latino community, healthcare for all, including undocumented immigrants, and investment in free public education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chan said that as a member of Congress she would work to expand sanctuary protections across the nation. Chakrabarti proposed hiring more immigration judges for the backlogged immigration court system, expanding the cap on visas, and streamlining the pathway to citizenship. \u201cWe need to fix our broken immigration system,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sfsteamacademy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.broadstreetads.com\/assets\/f31447af-2dbc-4e90-a02b-31774a2ced12.png\" alt=\"Open Enrollment 02\/2026\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The two candidates also agreed on defunding Immigration and Customs Enforcement and holding ICE agents accountable if they commit crimes, with Chan saying the Trump administration has been ignoring the rule of law.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s just take back Congress, and then also take back the White House and making sure that we enforce the rule of law,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The candidates also agreed on taxing billionaires and stopping increases to the military budget. But while Chan criticized President Donald Trump for his foreign policy, calling him a \u201cthreat to our national and global security,\u201d Chakrabarti also emphasized that both parties played a role in the current status quo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTrump is using this military state that got developed over decades, and using it for great destruction, but he didn\u2019t create this. He\u2019s just using it,\u201d Chakrabarti said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On questions about housing for immigrant communities, Chan spoke about the need to expand rental subsidies and build new affordable housing units, citing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sf.gov\/information--proposition-g-funding-rental-subsidies-affordable-housing-developments-serving-low\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">San Francisco\u2019s Proposition G of 2024<\/a>&nbsp;as an example of how she worked on providing rental subsidies at the local level. \u201cWe can continue to support all communities of low income, and all income levels, and including our undocumented community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chakrabarti said that he didn\u2019t believe government programs, like Section 8 vouchers, should be tied to people\u2019s immigration status.
