Chris Van Hollen and Elizabeth Warren make the case for the urgent ouster of President Donald Trump\u2019s Defense Secretary.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/jon-queally\">Jon Queally<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mar 13, 2026 (CommonDreams.org)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPete Hegseth needs to be fired\u2014immediately,\u201d argues US Sen. Chris Van Hollen in a video statement posted Thursday night alongside Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/elizabeth-warren\">Elizabeth Warren<\/a>, who also backs the demand. Their joint call arrived as global outrage mounts over the bombing of a Iranian school on Feb. 28 that killed upwards of 175 civilians, mostly young&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/children\">children<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Warren cited preliminary findings of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/pentagon\">Pentagon<\/a>&nbsp;report out this week that determined the US was the highly likely culprit behind the school massacre in the southeastern city of Minab, she noted, \u201ckilling mostly little girls between the ages of seven and 14.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RECOMMENDED&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/preliminary-findings-iran-school-bombing\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/new-yorkers-mourn-the-180-iranian-children-killed-by-the-us-israeli-bombing-in-iran.jpg?id=65258335&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=1018%2C0%2C1018%2C0\" alt=\"New Yorkers mourn the 180 Iranian children killed by the US-Israeli bombing in Iran\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/preliminary-findings-iran-school-bombing\">Preliminary Pentagon Findings Betray Trump\u2019s Outrageous Lies About Iranian School Massacre<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/hegseth-iran\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/pete-hegseth.jpg?id=65103824&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=833%2C0%2C833%2C0\" alt=\"Pete Hegseth\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/hegseth-iran\">\u2018\u200bShameless\u2019: Critics Hammer Pete Hegseth for Claiming \u2018We Didn\u2019t Start\u2019 War on Iran<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/human-rights\">Human rights<\/a>&nbsp;groups have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/us-bombing-of-iran-school-war-crime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">condemned<\/a>&nbsp;the bombing of the school\u2014which had happened on the very first day of Trump\u2019s unprovoked attack on Iran\u2014as a possible \u201cwar crime\u201d that demands independent investigation. Trump, for his part, has repeatedly lied about the bombing, claiming it was Iran who bombed the school, despite having access to internal intelligence assessments that appear to say otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rep.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/rashida-tlaib\">Rashida Tlaib<\/a>&nbsp;(D-Mich.) on Wednesday&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepRashida\/status\/2031863646301675604\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;there was more than enough evidence to conclude that the US was behind the attack, with reports bubbling up from inside the Pentagon only helping to confirm what outside analysts had determined. \u201cTrump should be impeached. Hegseth should be fired,\u201d Tlaib said. \u201cAnd the administration must be held accountable in international courts for their heinous&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/war-crimes\">war crimes<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Van Hollen and Warren, the massacre in Minab is only the latest and most gruesome example of the US military\u2019s bloodthirsty and careless conduct under Hegseth, whose time at the Pentagon has been marked by controversy and accusations of human rights abuses, national security blunders, and violations of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/international-law\">international law<\/a>\u00a0as a matter of policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Pete Hegseth needs to be fired.<br><br>New reporting seems to confirm our worst fears: it was a US missile that struck the girls school in Iran.<br><br>That strike comes at a time when Secretary Hegseth has systematically weakened US protections against civilian harm by our military.\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/A34bcLQI3w\">pic.twitter.com\/A34bcLQI3w<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Senator Chris Van Hollen (@ChrisVanHollen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChrisVanHollen\/status\/2032233934994518223?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 12, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had \u2018Signalgate,\u2019 where he put out troops at risk,\u201d says Van Hollen in the video, a reference to Hegseth using a public encryption communication tool to share national security details of a military operation that had yet to be carried out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had him blowing up ships in the Caribbean,\u201d he continues, attacks that have killed over 160 people and been called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/pete-hegseth-boat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nothing short of murder<\/a>&nbsp;by human rights experts. \u201cWe had them targeting defenseless swimmers\u201d who survived some of those attacks, said Van Hollen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s right,\u201d Warren interjects in the video, \u201cwith no accountability\u201d for any of that behavior. On top of all that, Van Hollen adds, Hegseth has \u201cno idea what he\u2019s doing in this war in Iran. As The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/new-york-times\">New York Times<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/13\/us\/politics\/hegseth-iran-war-rules.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">details<\/a>&nbsp;Friday, Hegseth\u2019s entire career has been colored by his criticism of what he views as the restrictive nature of rules designed to curb atrocities. Now serving as Secretary of Defense, he has been empowered to put his theories into action:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>[Hegseth] has tried to reshape Pentagon culture, reveling in lethality with \u201cno apologies, no hesitation.\u201d He has portrayed this approach as a \u201cwarrior ethos,\u201d one that is tough and manly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He came up as an Army infantry officer and, as he wrote in his 2024 memoir \u201cThe War on Warriors,\u201d loathed strict rules of engagement imposed to minimize risk to civilians, seeing heightened standards for when his platoon could open fire as putting soldiers at greater risk on the battlefield. He blamed judge advocate general lawyers, or JAGs, for such rules \u2014 even though it is commanders, not lawyers, who issue them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Hegseth later continued that line of thinking as a Fox News contributor and host and as an advocate for U.S. service members charged with war crimes. In his 2024 book, he questioned the need to obey the Geneva Conventions and derisively referred to military lawyers as \u201cjagoffs.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In the video with Van Hollen, Warren says the key reason behind the call for his immediate ouster has to do with Hegseth\u2019s hostility toward mechanisms designed to mitigate \u201ccivilian harm\u201d during war time or other military operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As legislators, Van Hollen and Warren describe how they helped put in place stronger rules to prevent civilian harm. \u201cWhenever the military is thinking about an attack,\u201d says Warren, \u201cwhere there are civilians in the area and innocent people could get harmed, it\u2019s how to think through \u2018What are the risks? Are there ways to minimize the risks? Have we checked and double checked?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut what did Pete Hegseth do?\u201d asks Warren. To which Van Hollen answers: \u201cHegseth came in and he dismantled the whole system.
