So is Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), who emerged from a closed-door House Armed Services Committee briefing on Wednesday saying she was \u201ceven more\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/ground-invasion-of-iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opposed<\/a>&nbsp;to boots on the ground than when she entered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But despite having introduced the resolution himself, Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY), the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, appeared to get cold feet about bringing it to the floor for a vote before next week\u2019s recess, a move which was met with anger and confusion from progressive&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/meeks-jeffries-back-off-war-powers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">critics<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson for Democrats on the committee told Common Dreams on Wednesday that Meeks was very much committed to passing a bill to \u201chold President Trump accountable for his reckless war of choice,\u201d but that one could not be pursued until April 13, after the recess, because some of the necessary \u201cyes\u201d votes had left&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/washington\">Washington<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drop Site News co-founder Ryan Grim described this as a \u201cpathetic\u201d excuse. \u201cAs Trump threatens a ground invasion, Democratic members of Congress are saying they won\u2019t do the one thing they are elected to do: Show up and vote,\u201d he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ryangrim\/status\/2036926383926960357\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/social-media\">social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Grim&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ryangrim\/status\/2037189345401053378\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;on Thursday that Reps. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) and Emanuel Cleaver II (D-Mo.) had since returned to town. The only Democrat not currently in DC, he said, was Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.), who said on Wednesday that his wife was undergoing a routine surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Axios&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/03\/26\/iran-trump-war-powers-vote-house-democrats?utm_medium=owned_social&amp;utm_source=x&amp;utm_campaign=editorial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;on Thursday afternoon that Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) is also absent due to the recent death of his father, and Rep. Jared Golden (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/maine\">Maine<\/a>), one of the Democrats who opposed the last war powers vote, was still wavering as of Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even with some absences,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/republicans\">Republicans<\/a>\u00a0are also not at full strength.\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/03\/26\/nancy-mace-iran-war-powers-trump-johnson\" target=\"_blank\">Assuming<\/a>\u00a0that Republican Reps. Thomas Massie (Ky.) and Warren Davidson (Ohio) plan to vote yes, as they did in February, there may still be enough votes for the resolution to pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is pretty amazing. <br><br>Rep. I know how to do my job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Franks pointed out that enough Republicans appeared to be on board, Meeks\u2014continuing to interrupt\u2014told her to \u201cgo find out\u201d herself if there were enough votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf only there were some mechanism on the House floor to find out how somebody might vote,\u201d Grim quipped in response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Democratic spokesperson could not be reached for comment when asked by Common Dreams whether Meeks was now planning to push for a resolution vote before the recess, given that some Democrats have returned to Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nathan Thompson, a senior policy adviser for Just Foreign Policy, argues that even if Democrats do not have the votes to pass the resolution now, there is no reason not to bring it to a vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cForcing a vote will make&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/house-republicans\">House Republicans<\/a>&nbsp;own an increasingly likely ground invasion,\u201d he said in a letter sent to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/house-democrats\">House Democrats<\/a>&nbsp;on Thursday morning, which was shared with Common Dreams. \u201cEven a vote that falls short will be painful for House Republicans and put real pressure on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/trump-administration\">Trump administration<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe attendance excuse doesn\u2019t hold,\u201d he said. \u201cMembers can return by tomorrow to vote, and Republicans aren\u2019t at full strength either&#8230; An unfortunate scheduling error should not prevent Congress from weighing in at a critical moment in history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Strait of Hormuz being blocked &#039;gives Iran leverage&#039;: Fmr. Panetta\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ytDfwbr0EoU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Calls for a war powers resolution on Capitol Hill continued to grow after reports that the Trump administration is mulling several potential ground operations in Iran, potentially as early as Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Axios&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/03\/26\/iran-invasion-plans-kharg-island-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;on Thursday that the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/pentagon\">Pentagon<\/a>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/ground-invasion-of-iran\">considering<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cinvading or blockading\u201d Kharg Island, Iran\u2019s primary&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/oil\">oil<\/a>&nbsp;export hub\u2014and sending American forces \u201cdeep inside the interior of Iran\u201d in an effort to seize the country\u2019s enriched uranium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concerns about the repercussions of a prolonged war\u2014even for just another two weeks\u2014are broadly shared. Speaking on MS NOW on Thursday, former Defense Secretary and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/cia\">CIA<\/a>&nbsp;Director Leon Panetta warned that serious dangers exist that a short extension of the war could lead to a much more intractable situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we continue the war,\u201d Panetta said, \u201cif we go another 16 days of war and we incur casualties, or they incur serious casualties, then the likelihood is that you\u2019re planting the seeds for a more permanent war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the risk of a more protracted conflict was magnified on Wednesday, Trump insisted that the US is not at war at all, but is simply waging a \u201cmilitary operation\u201d against Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>X post:  <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepJayapal\/status\/2037190982479860052?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2037190982479860052%7Ctwgr%5E8bb91794e1cd41c21ee0c2ef32b58f9e8ed0ef60%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fdems-war-powers-vote-now\">https:\/\/x.com\/RepJayapal\/status\/2037190982479860052?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2037190982479860052%7Ctwgr%5E8bb91794e1cd41c21ee0c2ef32b58f9e8ed0ef60%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fdems-war-powers-vote-now<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has heightened the urgency among many Democrats on Capitol Hill, including Rep.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/pramila-jayapal\">Pramila Jayapal<\/a>&nbsp;(D-Wash.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf it looks like a war, sounds like a war, and costs like a war\u2026 It\u2019s probably a war,\u201d the former chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepJayapal\/status\/2037190982479860052\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;on social media Thursday. \u201cTrump is admitting to violating the Constitution. No amount of doublespeak can change that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCongress must vote on another war powers resolution,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-Ill.) told Axios that there was \u201cabsolutely\u201d frustration among&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/progressives\">progressives<\/a>&nbsp;that Democrats were planning to punt the vote to next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, critics are increasingly raising suspicion that Meeks\u2014whom The Lever noted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.levernews.com\/democrats-stall-tactics-delay-iran-war-powers-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">received<\/a>&nbsp;more than $2.2 million from pro-Israel lobbying groups according to the watchdog group&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trackaipac.com\/states\/newyork?ref=levernews.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TrackAIPAC<\/a>\u2014is intentionally dragging out the vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A prolonged war and the resulting&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/iran-war-inflation-oecd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">economic turmoil<\/a>&nbsp;are brutally&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/iran-war-too-far-poll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unpopular<\/a>, including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/maga-iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">among Republicans<\/a>, and the theory goes that Democrats may seek to let it become an albatross around their opponents\u2019 necks in this fall\u2019s midterms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Independent journalist A\u00edda Ch\u00e1vez has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/aidachavez\/status\/2036806724313636987?s=20&amp;ref=levernews.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emphasized<\/a>&nbsp;that Meeks&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/dems-sabotage-iran-war-powers-resolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">held up<\/a>&nbsp;the previous war powers vote by overinflating the number of Democrats likely to defect, and may have attempted to do so again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But with Democratic stragglers on board and more Republicans \u201cstarting to break,\u201d Ch\u00e1vez&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/etanmab\/status\/2037184991818285081\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>: \u201cDemocratic leadership can\u2019t keep hiding behind process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBring the Iran war powers resolution to the floor right now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thompson of Just Foreign Policy warned Democrats that \u201cfailing to force a vote will be noticed and covered in the media,\u201d and that \u201cthe Democratic base is watching and expects their party to put up a real fight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven if the vote falls short by a couple votes, the members who voted yes will have a powerful record to champion to their constituents,\u201d he said. \u201cThe members who voted no will have a very difficult record to explain if troops end up being killed and injured on the ground in Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
