SAN FRANCISCO (KRON<\/a>) \u2014 Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi is calling on Rep. Eric Swalwell to drop out of the California governor\u2019s race following bombshell sexual assault allegations. Reports Friday from CNN<\/a> and in the San Francisco Chronicle detail a pattern of sexual misconduct from Swalwell, who has consistently polled as one of the leading Democrats in the governor\u2019s race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pelosi has joined a growing chorus of voices demanding Swalwell exit the race<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe young woman who has made serious allegations against Congressman Swalwell must be respected and heard,\u201d said Pelosi in a statement. \u201cThis extremely sensitive matter must be appropriately investigated with full transparency and accountability.\u201dFormer Swalwell staffer claims gubernatorial candidate sexually assaulted her: report<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs I discussed with Congressman Swalwell, it is clear that is best done outside of a gubernatorial campaign,\u201d Pelosi added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pelosi joins other leading Democrats including Sen. Adam Schiff in demanding that Swalwell exit the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has also weighed in, calling the allegations \u201cdeeply troubling,\u201d and saying they \u201cmust be taken seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis has joined the conversation, issuing the statement: \u201cCalifornians deserve leaders who meet the highest standards of integrity. The allegations against Congressman Eric Swalwell are deeply troubling, and I commend the women who have come forward for their courage. For the good of the state, I believe he should withdraw from the race for California governor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swalwell, who is married with two children, has vehemently denied all allegations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese allegations are false and come on the eve of an election against the frontrunner for governor,\u201d he told KRON4. \u201cFor nearly 20 years, I have served the public \u2014 as a prosecutor and a congressman and have always protected women.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will defend myself with the facts and where necessary bring legal action,\u201d he continued. \u201cMy focus in the coming days is to be with my wife and children and defend our decades of service against these lies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
