Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) speaks during a hearing of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC on April 22, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0(Photo by Saul Loeb\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cWe cannot allow unlimited outside spending to distort our elections or drown out the voices of working people.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/stephen-prager\">Stephen Prager<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apr 27, 2026 (CommonDreams.org)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/bernie-sanders\">Bernie Sanders<\/a>&nbsp;is leading a coalition of Democratic senators pushing for the party\u2019s leaders to require candidates to swear off billionaire- and corporate-backed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/super-pacs\">super PACs<\/a>, or political action committees, in this year\u2019s primary elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sens.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/jeff-merkley\">Jeff Merkley<\/a>&nbsp;(D-Ore.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/elizabeth-warren\">Elizabeth Warren<\/a>&nbsp;(D-Mass.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.), and Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) joined the independent senator from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/vermont\">Vermont<\/a>&nbsp;to send a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1BB7cIv8qtxd6uvQ2unotsPcugUQnWcLF\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter<\/a>&nbsp;to Senate Minority Leader&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/chuck-schumer\">Chuck Schumer<\/a>&nbsp;(D-NY) and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/democratic-national-committee\">Democratic National Committee<\/a>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/dnc\">DNC<\/a>) Chair Ken Martin on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RECOMMENDED&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/bernie-dark-money-ban\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/bernie-sanders-to-host-mamdani-at-fighting-oligarchy-rally-in-new-york.jpg?id=62648096&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=365%2C0%2C365%2C0\" alt=\"Bernie Sanders to host Mamdani at Fighting Oligarchy rally in New York\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/bernie-dark-money-ban\">DNC Half-Measures Condemning Dark Money Won\u2019t Cut It, Says Sanders as He Demands Total Ban<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/esa-amendments-act-of-2025\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/a-female-northern-spotted-owl-catches-a-mouse-on-a-stick-held-by-a-wildlife-biologist.jpg?id=65575993&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=833%2C0%2C834%2C0\" alt=\"A female northern spotted owl catches a mouse on a stick held by a wildlife biologist\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/esa-amendments-act-of-2025\">Mike Johnson to Unleash \u2018Catastrophic\u2019 Attack on Endangered Species Act<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Five of the senators are members of a group of Senate Democrats&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/11\/24\/us\/politics\/schumer-democrats-senate-fight-club.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">known<\/a>&nbsp;as the \u201cFight Club\u201d that has formed to oppose Schumer\u2019s preferred candidates in contested Democratic primaries, many of whom are closely aligned with the party\u2019s traditional corporate backers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the senators applauded the DNC\u2019s resolution last month broadly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/bernie-dark-money-ban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">condemning<\/a>&nbsp;the influence of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/dark-money\">dark money<\/a>&nbsp;in party elections, calling it an \u201cimportant first step,\u201d they said Democratic leaders needed to take more \u201cconcrete steps to curb the influence of dark money,\u201d particularly the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\">artificial intelligence<\/a>&nbsp;and cryptocurrency industries and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/aipac\">AIPAC<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCorporate-funded super PACs are shaping the 2026 elections as we speak, and the scale of their resources is unprecedented,\u201d the senators said. \u201cCrypto-aligned groups are preparing to spend $200 million, and AIPAC-affiliated groups already control more than $90 million. The AI industry has already spent over $185 million this year alone. These sums are being deployed to influence Democratic primaries and overwhelm candidates who rely on grassroots support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>April\u2019s broad anti-dark money resolution was passed by the DNC in lieu of one that directly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/aipac-dnc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">singled out<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cthe growing influence\u201d of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/aipac\">AIPAC<\/a>, specifically over its more than $100 million&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/aipac-100-million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spending blitz<\/a>&nbsp;in 2024 to oust progressive candidates. Despite a dramatic shift toward&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/israel-us-voters-poll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opposition<\/a>&nbsp;to Israel among Democratic voters over the past three years, that resolution was voted down by a DNC panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AIPAC continues to dump massive amounts of money behind its preferred candidates. The senators\u2019 letter notes that \u201cin Illinois alone, outside groups spent over $50 million in recent Democratic primaries.\u201d Nearly half of that money was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/progressives-aipac-illinois\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spent<\/a>&nbsp;by AIPAC, which secretly funneled money to support its candidates using&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/shell\">shell<\/a>&nbsp;groups that appeared to be unaffiliated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group has used similar tactics in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/analilia-mejia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New Jersey<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/pennsylvania\">Pennsylvania<\/a>. Ala Stanford, a candidate for Pennsylvania\u2019s 3rd District in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/philadelphia\">Philadelphia<\/a>, was recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/philly-dem-secret-aipac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">revealed<\/a>&nbsp;to have received $500,000 worth of backing from AIPAC through a super PAC despite claiming to have received no support from the Israel lobby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/maine\">Maine<\/a>, a clique of Republican billionaires who back Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/susan-collins\">Susan Collins<\/a>&nbsp;(R-Maine)\u2014including&nbsp;<strong><\/strong>Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman and Palantir CEO Alex Karp\u2014also recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/collins-pac-billionaire-platner-ad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dropped<\/a>&nbsp;$2 million to fund an ad campaign seeking to hamper the chances of the Democratic Senate primary front-runner Graham Platner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe cannot allow unlimited outside spending to distort our elections or drown out the voices of working people,\u201d the senators said in Sunday\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Super PACs like AIPAC, AI and crypto are buying elections with billionaire money.<br><br>We&#39;ll never address the major crises facing our country as long as that continues. <br><br>We must overturn Citizens United and kick billionaire-funded super PACs OUT of Democratic primaries NOW. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/weZGwx0izI\">pic.twitter.com\/weZGwx0izI<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Bernie Sanders (@BernieSanders) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BernieSanders\/status\/2047038511706951940?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 22, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The senators noted Schumer\u2019s past&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/455342-democrats-introduce-constitutional-amendment-to-overturn-citizens-united\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>&nbsp;that overturning the Supreme Court\u2019s 2010 ruling in&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/citizens-united\">Citizens United<\/a>&nbsp;v. Federal Election Commission<\/em>, which opened the door for the flood of corporate money into elections by allowing individuals to independently spend unlimited amounts in support of candidates, was \u201cprobably more important than any other single thing we could do to preserve this great and grand democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said that while reversing the ruling remained a \u201ccritical long-term goal,\u201d the party \u201chas the authority\u2014and the responsibility\u2014to act now with clear, enforceable rules.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNational and state parties should require all Democratic candidates to sign a pledge opposing billionaire- and corporate-backed super PAC spending on their behalf in Democratic primaries,\u201d they said. \u201cThe DNC, state parties, and committees working to elect Democrats to the House and Senate have many potential tools at their disposal to enforce that pledge, including withholding endorsements for those who make endorsements in the primary, and they should use whatever tools necessary to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanders has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/27\/us\/bernie-sanders-super-pacs-democrats-primaries.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;that simply requiring candidates to take a pledge is not enough and that party leaders need to be diligent about holding them to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf the Democrats are going to be honest and consistent in terms of their concerns about money and politics, they\u2019ve got to clean up, in my view, their own house immediately,\u201d he said in an interview on Saturday. \u201cThat means getting super PACs out of Democratic primaries, congressional as well as presidential.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
