Fallon\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cThat this administration would direct USPS to adopt measures to impede voters from casting their ballots is shameful.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/jake-johnson\">Jake Johnson<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jun 04, 2026 (CommonDreams.org)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A leading&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/civil-rights\">civil rights<\/a>&nbsp;organization on Wednesday accused the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/us-postal-service\">US Postal Service<\/a>&nbsp;of unlawful complicity in President Donald Trump\u2019s assault on mail-in voting, which he launched in late March with an alarming executive order that is facing its own legal challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naacpldf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026-06-03-NAACP-v.-USPS-Motion_as-filed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new legal motion<\/a>&nbsp;filed in a federal court in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/washington\">Washington<\/a>, DC, the NAACP is challenging&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/public-inspection.federalregister.gov\/2026-10968.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rules<\/a>&nbsp;the Postal Service unveiled last week that would require states to notify USPS \u201cof the individuals to whom they are mailing a mail-in or absentee ballot.\u201d The rules would also \u201cidentify new standards for the envelope design and review for outbound and return ballot envelopes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RECOMMENDED&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-iran-war-fox-news\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/president-donald-trump-sits-for-an-interview-with-lara-trump.jpg?id=66844880&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=192%2C0%2C192%2C0\" alt=\"President Donald Trump sits for an interview with Lara Trump \"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/trump-iran-war-fox-news\">Watch: Trump Admits \u2018We Shouldn\u2019t Have Been in Iran\u2019<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/stephen-miller-ugly\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/stephen-miller.jpg?id=61496087&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=170%2C0%2C171%2C0\" alt=\"Stephen Miller\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/stephen-miller-ugly\">Asked About Stephen Miller, DNC Staffer Happy to Confirm: \u2018I Stand by Calling Him an Ugly Fuck\u2019<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The NAACP\u2019s filing\u2014which reignites a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/government\/us-postal-service-naacp-reach-settlement-election-mail-2021-12-17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pandemic-era legal fight<\/a>\u2014warns that under the proposed rule, \u201cUSPS would refuse to transmit mail-in ballots in states that did not use specific envelopes with specific codes, and would refuse to deliver ballots for voters not included on a state-specific Mail-In and Absentee Participation List.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That would violate a previous USPS agreement, reached in 2021, to prioritize \u201ctimely delivery of election mail\u201d and run afoul of federal law, the motion argues, calling for a swift injunction to stop the Postal Service from implementing the rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe proposed rule manifests USPS\u2019 intent to disregard its commitment to timely deliver mail-in ballots to all voters,\u201d said Sam Spital, associate director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF). \u201cThis all is part of a coordinated effort by this Administration to create chaos and confusion in our elections, which creates particular dangers for Black voters who are already at the greatest risk of suffering discrimination in voting. The attempt to usurp the right of eligible voters to cast mail-in ballots is directly contrary to the legally enforceable agreement the parties reached in this case, and to USPS\u2019 obligations under federal law. We are confident it will be rejected by the courts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allison Zieve, director of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/public-citizen\">Public Citizen<\/a>&nbsp;Litigation Group\u2014which joined LDF in filing the suit on behalf of the NAACP\u2014said it is \u201cshameful\u201d that the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/trump-administration\">Trump administration<\/a>&nbsp;would \u201cdirect USPS to adopt measures to impede voters from casting their ballots.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd that USPS would allow itself to be used for political purposes to advance the president\u2019s irrational objection to mail-in voting is disgraceful, unlawful, and contrary to the commitments it made to settle our [2020] litigation,\u201d Zieve added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposed USPS rules stem from an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2026\/03\/ensuring-citizenship-verification-and-integrity-in-federal-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">executive order<\/a>&nbsp;that Trump issued on March 31, instructing the agency to obtain from states \u201ca list of voters eligible to vote in a federal election in such state to whom the state intends to provide a mail-in or absentee ballot to be transmitted via the USPS.\u201d Trump directed his handpicked postmaster general, David Steiner, to advance \u201cprovisions specifying that the USPS shall not transmit mail-in or absentee ballots from any individual\u201d who is not included on state mail-in ballot participation lists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, a Trump-appointed federal judge in Washington, DC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/28\/us\/politics\/trump-voting-executive-order.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">declined to immediately block<\/a>&nbsp;the president\u2019s executive order. But another federal judge in Boston \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/government\/boston-judge-weigh-blocking-trumps-mail-in-voting-executive-order-2026-06-02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sharply questioned<\/a>\u201d Trump\u2019s order during a hearing for a similar yet separate legal challenge earlier this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorneys representing the plaintiffs in the latter case said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/press-releases\/federal-court-hears-challenge-to-trump-executive-order-restricting-mail-in-ballots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>&nbsp;after Tuesday\u2019s hearing that \u201cthe Trump administration is attempting to seize that power for itself with an unlawful and dangerous executive order.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTogether with our courageous clients, we\u2019re seeking a preliminary injunction to stop further chaos in our elections, uphold the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/rule-of-law\">rule of law<\/a>, and protect the millions of citizens who rely on mail-in voting, including people with disabilities, students, rural voters, and the elderly,\u201d the attorneys said. \u201cWe won\u2019t let the Trump administration continue to trample on the fundamental right to vote.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
