House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries<\/a> helped Republicans<\/a> tank Rep. Rashida Tlaib\u2019s war powers resolution to limit US military<\/a> involvement in Lebanon<\/a> on Thursday, holding up the effort to curb the conflict for at least another several weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite Israel\u2019s invasion of\u00a0Lebanon<\/a>\u00a0pushing deeper<\/a>, with more than 3,500 people killed and 1.2 million displaced since early March, the Michigan Democrat\u2019s resolution was defeated in a 324-92 vote, with a large number in her own party joining Jeffries (D-NY) and the Republican majority against it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018This Must Stop\u2019: Call Grows for US Lawmakers to Pass Lebanon War Powers Resolution<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In a joint statement shortly ahead of the vote on Tlaib\u2019s resolution, House Minority Leader Jeffries of New York, along with Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.), and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.), said: \u201cWe stand with the Lebanese people, the government of Lebanon, and the Lebanese Armed Forces in their efforts to live peacefully and defeat Hezbollah<\/a>.\u201d The statement included no mention of Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lawmakers said they\u2019d support a different resolution<\/a> introduced by Tlaib on Wednesday, which was crafted in tandem with Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY), the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That resolution likewise required President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0to remove US forces \u201cfrom any hostilities in Lebanon\u201d within seven days of passage. But it also added the caveat that it could not be construed to \u201cprevent or limit security cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
