The Center on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/budget\">Budget<\/a>\u00a0and Policy Priorities (CBPP)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/poor-children-losing-food-aid\">estimates<\/a>\u00a0that at least 700,000\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/children\">children<\/a>\u00a0have lost SNAP since President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0signed into law a Republican budget package last summer, enacting the largest-ever cuts to the federal nutrition program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Rollins: No one was kicked off of SNAP. If they are not on SNAP, they have chosen not to reapply or they are an able bodied adult that can work. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/eaiVO9XRwb\">pic.twitter.com\/eaiVO9XRwb<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Acyn (@Acyn) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Acyn\/status\/2064752293510283702?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDid 700,000 children simply not apply?\u201d Rachel Sabella, director of the No Kid Hungry New York campaign,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RachelS23\/status\/2064761821253251378\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asked<\/a>&nbsp;in response to Rollins\u2019 remarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Katie Bergh, a CBPP policy analyst, pointed to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/trump-food-stamp-cuts-children-arizona-hungry-big-beautiful-bill-rcna343922\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent reporting by NBC News<\/a>, which spoke to a mother of two in Arizona who said her \u201cbenefits stopped without warning three months ago\u201d after the state began implementing new&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/research\/health\/coordinating-medicaid-and-snap-work-requirements-to-streamline-determinations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eligibility requirements<\/a>&nbsp;included in the Republican budget law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been really hard,\u201d the mother said. \u201cWe\u2019ve been going to food banks every week&#8230; We\u2019re eating less, we\u2019re eating more frozen stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rollins, a multimillionaire, has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/brooke-rollins-snap-changes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">openly celebrated<\/a>&nbsp;the massive and rapid decline in SNAP participation during Trump\u2019s second&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/white-house\">White House<\/a>&nbsp;term, claiming that the roughly 4 million people who have been \u201cmoved\u201d off the program are closer to realizing \u201cthe American dream\u201d\u2014even as&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/hunger-rises-under-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hunger grows<\/a>&nbsp;to levels not seen since the height of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/covid-19\">Covid-19<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/pandemic\">pandemic<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a celebration of work and the dignity of work,\u201d Rollins told senators on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But CBPP concluded in an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/blog\/post-megabill-drop-in-snap-participation-is-steepest-in-decades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analysis<\/a>&nbsp;released in late April that the \u201cdramatic\u201d loss of SNAP benefits across the country \u201ccannot be explained by a rapid improvement in people\u2019s economic well-being or reduced need for help affording food.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLabor force data show that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/unemployment\">unemployment<\/a>\u00a0rate\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/data.bls.gov\/timeseries\/LNS14000000\" target=\"_blank\">was flat<\/a>\u00a0between July 2025 and March 2026, the most recent data available,\u201d the think tank observed. \u201cA more likely explanation for why people are losing access to food assistance is that states are now facing new challenges as they respond to the cuts in [the Republican budget law]\u2014the largest in the program\u2019s history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
