Maine<\/a> Democrats on Saturday overwhelmingly nominated Troy Jackson, a former state Senate president and logger by trade<\/a>, as their party\u2019s nominee to challenge longtime Republican incumbent Susan Collins<\/a> in November\u2019s high-stakes US Senate<\/a> election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, thank you, Maine,\u201d Jackson, 58, said after securing the votes of 566 of 571 delegates during Saturday\u2019s special Democratic convention at Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. \u201cToday we turn the page, today this becomes a general election campaign, and today we win the work of defeating Susan Collins in November.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor nearly 30 years, Collins has told Maine that she is \u2018concerned\u2019,\u201d Jackson said, referring to the 73-year-old incumbent\u2019s go-to word when President\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Republicans<\/a>\u00a0attack rights and justice. \u201cShe was concerned while she rubber-stamped Trump\u2019s\u00a0Medicaid<\/a>\u00a0cuts and gutted our\u00a0healthcare<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe\u2019s concerned when she cut taxes for corporations and the wealthy,\u201d he continued. \u201cConcerned when she confirmed justices who overturned Roe v. Wade<\/a>. <\/em>And really tragically, she was concerned when she gave [US Immigration<\/a> and Customs Enforcement] billions to terrorize our neighbors and murder people in the streets with no accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut concern does not lower the costs of groceries or gas,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cConcern does not keep our monitoring wards of rural hospitals like down in Lincoln County open. Concern does not restore all the rights that she\u2019s taken away. Maine does not need another six years of concern. We need someone with courage. We need a fighter, and we need a senator who remembers exactly who sent them to Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo if you\u2019ve ever been ignored, underestimated, pushed around, or told that you have to wait your turn while the rich cut the line, I\u2019m asking you to stand with us in this campaign,\u201d he continued. \u201cIf you believe in your heart that healthcare is a right, stand with us. And if you believe that workers<\/a> deserve power, stand with us. And if you believe our freedoms are worth defending, stand with us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd if you believe that Maine deserves a senator who will fight like hell for working-class people, well, stand with us,\u201d Jackson added. \u201cWe have a party to unite, we have a movement to build, and we have a senator to defeat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
