Andy Beshear.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/stephen-prager\">Stephen Prager<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jul 28, 2026 (CommonDreams.org)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After weeks of sitting on his hands, Kentucky\u2019s Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear issued an ultimatum to the state\u2019s absentee Sen.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/mitch-mcconnell\">Mitch McConnell<\/a>&nbsp;on Tuesday: Prove you\u2019re alive and can do the job or step down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since he was hospitalized on June 14, McConnell\u2019s 4.6 million constituents have been left with virtually no answers about the 84-year-old Republican\u2019s condition, leading to rampant speculation of a cover-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RECOMMENDED&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/jared-polis-tina-peters\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/jared-polis.jpg?id=67085963&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=833%2C0%2C834%2C0\" alt=\"Jared Polis\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/jared-polis-tina-peters\">Colorado Governor Fires Officials Who Criticized Democrat\u2019s Release of Election-Denying Clerk<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/pete-hegseth-budget-request\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/media-library\/us-secretary-of-defense-pete-hegseth-testifies-before-a-us-house-armed-services-committee-hearing-in-washington-dc-on-april-29.jpg?id=66667477&amp;width=1200&amp;height=1200&amp;quality=70&amp;coordinates=833%2C0%2C834%2C0\" alt=\"Hegseth Is Demanding US Households Pay $5,000 More Per Year to Fund the Pentagon, Economist Says\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/pete-hegseth-budget-request\">Hegseth Is Demanding US Households Pay $5,000 More Per Year to Fund the Pentagon, Economist Says<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some even&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kenklippenstein.com\/p\/mitch-mcconnells-dead-line\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pondered<\/a>&nbsp;whether the former Senate Republican leader may have shuffled off this mortal coil altogether, but that his staff was keeping mum until the presumptive August 3 deadline to avoid a special election that could lead to suboptimal results for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/gop\">GOP<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beshear, who has the power to call a special election to fill vacant Senate seats, had chastized McConnell and his staff for weeks for the lack of transparency about his condition. But he continued to balk about taking action, even as members of his party&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kentuckylantern.com\/2026\/07\/22\/despite-calls-for-beshear-to-do-something-about-mitch-mcconnell-the-answer-isnt-so-simple\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">begged him<\/a>&nbsp;to \u201cdo something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is, until Monday, when McConnell\u2019s office&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/kentucky-governor-corners-top-senate-republican-on-mitch-mcconnells-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released<\/a>&nbsp;an update from his physician, which stated that the senator was undergoing \u201ca strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation\u201d but was \u201cnot yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beshear finally sent McConnell a letter demanding proof of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>X post:  <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PollTracker2024\/status\/2082124565774233638?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2082124565774233638%7Ctwgr%5E2cdd4384654dcefeb7f86eb883864a8b18a94328%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fbeshear-mcconnell-proof-of-life\">https:\/\/x.com\/PollTracker2024\/status\/2082124565774233638?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2082124565774233638%7Ctwgr%5E2cdd4384654dcefeb7f86eb883864a8b18a94328%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fbeshear-mcconnell-proof-of-life<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has now been 43 days since news of your hospitalization,\u201d Beshear wrote. \u201cDuring that time you have cast zero votes, engaged in no official activities, and aside from two photos and corresponding statements, have made no effort to communicate with your Kentucky constituents or the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The governor noted that the physician\u2019s statement still provided no details about the seven-term senator\u2019s actual condition, \u201cincluding whether you can speak, reason, or carry out your duties as a senator.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs governor of the state you serve,\u201d Beshear continued, \u201cI am calling on you to directly and verbally address the people of Kentucky and provide proof of your capacity to serve, or resign.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beshear said he\u2019d sent the same letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), who took over McConnell\u2019s longtime role in 2025 before he announced his plans not to run for reelection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beshear said if McConnell still proved \u201cunwilling\u201d to demonstrate his capacity to serve, he\u2019d insist Thune\u2014one of the few people who claim to have spoken to McConnell since he vanished from public view\u2014fully investigate his condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll of this speculation and even this letter could have been avoided with a minimal amount of transparency,\u201d Beshear concluded. \u201cKentuckians are just asking you to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Beshear: &quot;There&#39;s an argument out there that August 3 is a date where I could not later call a special election. It&#39;s been since 1992 that we had a\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HLcd4HkiVo\">pic.twitter.com\/HLcd4HkiVo<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/atrupar\/status\/2082127803814678839?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 28, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While most states allow governors to name an interim replacement when senators die or get expelled, Kentucky is one of just four exceptions, ironically thanks to some classic McConnell machinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, the then-Senate minority leader pressured Kentucky\u2019s GOP-controlled Legislature to restrict Beshear\u2019s power to unilaterally name a replacement, instead requiring him to pick from a list approved by the departing senator\u2019s party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three years later, Kentucky abolished temporary replacements entirely, meaning the most Beshear could do was call a special election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, the law has not yet been tested by a vacancy, and Beshear has said he\u2019d be willing to challenge its constitutionality in hopes of naming the replacement himself, adding a 48th member to the chamber\u2019s Democratic caucus, at least until January, when it would be filled by whoever wins McConnell\u2019s seat during November\u2019s midterms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Kentucky is a consistently red state and has not elected a Democratic senator since 1992, Beshear\u2019s multiple terms as governor show it is capable of electing Democrats in statewide races, and could be more likely to do so in what is projected to be a blue wave year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Kentucky\u2019s law also says special elections must be called at least 63 days before they occur. This gives&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/republicans\">Republicans<\/a>&nbsp;ample incentive to keep McConnell as Schr\u00f6dinger\u2019s senator until at least August 3, after which a replacement would not be able to take office until the new Senate term begins in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview with Bloomberg on Tuesday, Beshear argued that McConnell\u2019s absence for the rest of the year \u201cmight not be a bad thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMcConnell hasn\u2019t been there to vote on the SAVE Act, which would tear\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/voting-rights\">voting rights<\/a>\u00a0away. He hasn\u2019t been there to vote to support this war on Iran that this president started and shouldn\u2019t be continuing,\u201d Beshear said. \u201cNot having Mitch McConnell show up isn\u2019t necessarily a bad thing because he certainly doesn\u2019t show up to help the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
