One of the many questions swirling around new US Attorney General Todd Blanche is whether he\u2019d go along with President Donald Trump\u2019s efforts to subvert the result of another election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2020, when Trump attempted to overturn his loss to former President Joe Biden<\/a>, his attempts to claim the result was marred by systemic fraud were met with resistance from then-Attorney General William Barr<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But under Blanche, who served for two years as Trump\u2019s personal defense attorney, things may be very different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s according to another of Trump\u2019s former lawyers, Ty Cobb, who served as White House<\/a> special counsel for nearly a year during Trump\u2019s first term, as he came under investigation by then-special counsel Robert Mueller<\/a> over his campaign\u2019s alleged coordination with the Russian government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cobb, who has been an outspoken critic of both Trump and his appointment of Blanche, appeared for an interview<\/a> released Saturday on Zeteo\u2019s \u201cMehdi Unfiltered.\u201d Host Mehdi Hasan asked Cobb, \u201cCome 2028, does American democracy<\/a> survive Donald Trump<\/a>?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sure they survive it in 2026,\u201d Cobb responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noting Barr\u2019s resistance to Trump in 2020, Hasan asked: \u201cIf the midterms don\u2019t go Trump\u2019s way this fall, is there any world in which Todd Blanche stands up to Trump if he\u2019s asked to find some fake evidence of voter fraud, or are we screwed now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re screwed,\u201d Cobb said bluntly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGreat,\u201d Hasan said. \u201cThat\u2019s what I suspected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump has, on multiple occasions, floated<\/a> the idea of canceling the midterm elections<\/a> outright and has enacted measures aimed at blocking mail-in voting<\/a> and seizing voter information<\/a> from states. He has also said he wants<\/a> Republicans<\/a> to \u201cnationalize\u201d elections in Democratic-leaning locales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cobb noted that Blanche \u201chas already echoed<\/a> [former Trump chief strategist] Steve Bannon\u2019s view<\/a> that [Immigration<\/a> and Customs Enforcement] should be on the street during the election,\u201d adding, \u201cI think we\u2019ll almost certainly see that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hasan pointed out that the administration has routinely ignored<\/a> court orders, especially with regard to its immigration enforcement. Cobb predicted that \u201cthe level of noncompliance\u201d so far \u201cis nothing compared to what we\u2019re about to see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that if Democrats take the US House<\/a> of Representatives and begin pursuing investigations, he suspects there will be \u201ca number of contemptuous acts\u201d by the administration. \u201cWe can count on the Justice Department to pursue zero of those referrals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s assuming that the midterms actually produce a Democratic Congress,\u201d he continued, noting that even if one were elected legitimately, \u201cwhether they get seated or not by [Republican House Speaker] Little Mikey Johnson and his service to the president, that remains to be seen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cobb said that\u2019s in addition to other \u201cdangers\u201d around the election, including the presence of ICE agents. \u201cBlanche has suggested that people should be happy to see ICE at the polls.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where Barr refused Trump\u2019s requests to do so in 2020, Cobb said, \u201cThere\u2019s no circumstance under which we shouldn\u2019t expect Blanche to seize ballots and seize voting machines and try to interfere in the process of the upcoming election.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think that the president has made it very clear that he doesn\u2019t want immigrants or people of color to have the ability to go to the polls,\u201d Cobb said. \u201cHe\u2019s going to do everything he can in blue states and elsewhere to try to prevent this election from going smoothly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
