Agrowing number of establishment Democrats are facing backlash from progressives<\/a> for their escalating attacks on leftist streamer Hasan Piker, with critics accusing the party\u2019s corporatist wing of obsessing over an online influencer while ignoring the economic and foreign policy grievances driving millions of voters away on the eve of the critical midterm elections<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest controversy erupted after Piker argued during an online broadcast that Jewish Americans\u2019 public support for Israel could contribute to antisemitism<\/a>. Piker\u2019s comments drew swift condemnation from prominent Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries<\/a> (NY), who, without naming Piker, called them<\/a> \u201cdangerous and antisemitic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other Democrats piled on, prompting rebuke from progressives, who accused the centrists of caring more about an online personality than winning back control of Congress in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former progressive Michigan congressional candidate Kyle Blomquist\u00a0called it<\/a>\u00a0an \u201cabsolute mass psychosis event.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToo many demotivated Democrats stayed home in 2016 and 2024. We can\u2019t repeat past mistakes,\u201d Rep. Ro Khanna<\/a> (D-Calif.) said<\/a> on social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Khanna implored Democrats to stop calling Sen. Bernie Sanders<\/a> (I-Vt.)\u2014who is Jewish\u2014an antisemite and \u201cstop wasting time attacking Hasan Piker instead of [President Donald] Trump\u2019s robber-baron corruption<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t put Israel hawks out of touch with our voters in charge of our Middle East policy,\u201d he added. \u201cIt is time for a reckoning: Are we a party that represents corporate interests and super PACs<\/a>, or will we represent the American people?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to<\/a> Track AIPAC<\/a>, pro-Israel Democrats have taken tens of millions of dollars in campaign contributions from pro-Israel lobby groups, including the American Israel Public Affairs Committee\u2019s United Democracy<\/a> Project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Khanna\u2019s comments came a day after Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY), the leading Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, announced<\/a> the appointment of Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) as ranking member of the Middle East and North Africa<\/a> Subcommittee. Moskowitz, who said<\/a> earlier this year that he is \u201cto the right\u201d of Vice President JD Vance<\/a> in his support of Trump\u2019s illegal US-Israeli war of choice on Iran, is one of the strongest supporters of Israel in Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This, at a time when three-quarters of Democratic voters oppose<\/a> US aid to Israel\u2014up from just 45% three years ago\u2014and after the issue was a factor<\/a> in former Vice President Kamala Harris<\/a>\u2019 loss to Trump in the 2024 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A majority of Democratic voters also believe<\/a> that Israel\u2019s US-backed war on Gaza<\/a> is a genocide<\/a>, a position also held by United Nations experts<\/a><\/a>, around 20 countries that joined South Africa\u2019s ongoing genocide case<\/a> at the International Court of Justice<\/a>, human rights groups<\/a>, and scholars around the world\u2014including in Israel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jasper Nathaniel, a US journalist known for his coverage of Israel\u2019s illegal occupation, settler colonization, and ethnic cleansing<\/a> of the West Bank<\/a>, posted<\/a> on X: \u201cThe entire bipartisan political establishment has coalesced around a willful misreading of what Hasan Piker said in order to silence criticism of Israel. They\u2019re doing the same thing<\/a> to Mark Ruffalo in Hollywood. It\u2019s all fucking gaslighting. Don\u2019t give an inch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat Hasan said is completely intuitive. Everyone knows that Israel\u2019s genocide of Palestinians\u2014and the Jewish institutions\u2019 blanket support for it\u2014has created more hostility towards Jews,\u201d he added. \u201cThere is no good-faith argument against this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jacobin staff writer Branko Marcetic asserted<\/a> Wednesday that \u201ccentrists despise Hasan Piker more than they want to win.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an extreme stretch to describe Piker\u2019s remarks as an incitement of or justification for violence and bigotry against Jews,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe basic point he\u2019s making\u2014that the tendency by pro-Israel voices to conflate Jewishness with lockstep support for Israel makes Jews less safe\u2014has been made by a number of Jewish voices, including Ezra Klein<\/a> at The New York Times<\/a>, David Klion<\/a> at The Nation, Norman Solomon<\/a> at The Guardian, union organizer Molly Kraft, <\/a>and Hannah Arendt<\/a> nearly 80 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dispute has now ensnared Michigan US Senate<\/a> candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who campaigned alongside Piker during his successful Democratic primary bid. El-Sayed has somewhat distanced himself from Piker\u2019s comments, emphasizing that the campaign represents his own views and condemning antisemitism. It hasn\u2019t placated establishment Democrats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Democrats have implored their party to keep its eyes on the proverbial prize\u2014winning back Congress\u2014instead of engaging in senseless internecine battles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBillionaires are draining our resources to develop a technology<\/a> they want to replace us, millions will lose Medicaid<\/a> in the new year to pay for tax cuts<\/a> for the rich, and we\u2019re spending billions on genocidal wars the voters oppose,\u201d said<\/a> Melat Kiros, the progressive Democratic nominee for Colorado\u2019s 1st Congressional District. \u201cBut sure, let\u2019s keep talking about Hasan Piker.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not just Democratic Socialists of America-type progressives who get it. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.)\u00a0admonished<\/a>\u00a0reporters during a Wednesday campaign rally for El-Sayed at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
