She played a pivotal role in the development of <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Anarchist political philosophy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anarchist_political_philosophy\">anarchist political philosophy<\/a> in North America and Europe in the first half of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Kovno, <a title=\"Russian Empire\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russian_Empire\">Russian Empire<\/a> (present-day <a title=\"Kaunas\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kaunas\">Kaunas<\/a>, <a title=\"Lithuania\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lithuania\">Lithuania<\/a>) to a Jewish family, Goldman emigrated to the United States in 1885.\u00a0Attracted to anarchism after the <a title=\"Haymarket affair\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haymarket_affair\">Haymarket affair<\/a>, Goldman became a writer and a renowned lecturer on anarchist philosophy, women&#8217;s rights, and social issues, attracting crowds of thousands.\u00a0She and anarchist writer <a title=\"Alexander Berkman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_Berkman\">Alexander Berkman<\/a>, her lover and lifelong friend, planned to assassinate industrialist and financier <a title=\"Henry Clay Frick\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_Clay_Frick\">Henry Clay Frick<\/a> as an act of <a title=\"Propaganda of the deed\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Propaganda_of_the_deed\">propaganda of the deed<\/a>. Frick survived the attempt on his life in 1892 and Berkman was sentenced to 22 years in prison. Goldman was imprisoned several times in the years that followed, for &#8220;inciting to riot&#8221; and illegally distributing information about <a title=\"Birth control\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Birth_control\">birth control<\/a>. In 1906, Goldman founded the anarchist journal <i><a title=\"Mother Earth (magazine)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mother_Earth_(magazine)\">Mother Earth<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1917, Goldman and Berkman were sentenced to two years in jail for conspiring to &#8220;induce persons not to register&#8221; for the <a title=\"Conscription in the United States\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Conscription_in_the_United_States\">newly instated draft<\/a>. After their release from prison, they were arrested\u2014along with hundreds of others\u2014and deported to <a title=\"Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Russian_Soviet_Federative_Socialist_Republic\">Russia<\/a>. Initially supportive of that country&#8217;s <a title=\"October Revolution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/October_Revolution\">October Revolution<\/a> which brought the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Bolshevik\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bolshevik\">Bolsheviks<\/a> to power, Goldman reversed her opinion in the wake of the <a title=\"Kronstadt rebellion\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kronstadt_rebellion\">Kronstadt rebellion<\/a> and denounced the <a title=\"Soviet Union\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soviet_Union\">Soviet Union<\/a> for its violent repression of independent voices. In 1923, she published a book about her experiences, <i><a title=\"My Disillusionment in Russia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/My_Disillusionment_in_Russia\">My Disillusionment in Russia<\/a><\/i>. While living in England, Canada, and France, she wrote an autobiography called <i><a title=\"Living My Life\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Living_My_Life\">Living My Life<\/a><\/i>. After the outbreak of the <a title=\"Spanish Civil War\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_Civil_War\">Spanish Civil War<\/a>, she traveled to Spain to support the <a title=\"Spanish Revolution of 1936\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spanish_Revolution_of_1936\">anarchist revolution<\/a> there. She died in <a title=\"Toronto\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toronto\">Toronto<\/a> on May 14, 1940, aged 70.<\/p>\n<p>During her life, Goldman was lionized as a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Free-thinking\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Free-thinking\">free-thinking<\/a> &#8220;rebel woman&#8221; by admirers, and denounced by detractors as an advocate of politically motivated murder and violent revolution.\u00a0Her writing and lectures spanned a wide variety of issues, including prisons, <a title=\"Atheism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atheism\">atheism<\/a>, <a title=\"Freedom of speech\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Freedom_of_speech\">freedom of speech<\/a>, <a title=\"Militarism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Militarism\">militarism<\/a>, <a title=\"Capitalism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capitalism\">capitalism<\/a>, marriage, <a title=\"Free love\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Free_love\">free love<\/a>, and homosexuality. Although she distanced herself from <a title=\"First-wave feminism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First-wave_feminism\">first-wave feminism<\/a> and its efforts toward <a title=\"Women's suffrage\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Women%27s_suffrage\">women&#8217;s suffrage<\/a>, she developed new ways of incorporating gender politics into anarchism.
