(Photo: Battle for the Net)<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In addition to making their voices heard\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/12\/07\/shouting-stopthefcc-net-neutrality-defenders-target-lawmakers-and-verizon-nationwide\">in the streets<\/a>, net neutrality defenders have planned a massive online demonstration this week ahead of the FCC&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/11\/16\/time-raise-hell-internet-defenders-mobilize-fcc-aims-kill-net-neutrality-within\">scheduled vote<\/a>\u00a0on chairman Ajit Pai&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/09\/27\/consumer-survey-shows-two-thirds-oppose-fccs-plan-destroy-free-and-open-internet\">deeply unpopular<\/a>\u00a0plan to kill the open internet, which critics have denounced as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/newswire\/2017\/11\/21\/fcc-scuttling-net-neutrality-another-handout-big-business-expense-consumers\">naked corporatism<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"pullquote\">&#8220;The FCC is days away from voting to kill net neutrality, but Congress can still stop them. On December 12th we&#8217;ll #BreakTheInternet to stop censorship, throttling, and extra fees.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2014Zephyr Teachout<\/p>\n<p><span id=\":bh.co\" class=\"tL8wMe EMoHub\" dir=\"ltr\">Slated to begin Tuesday\u2014<\/span><span id=\":bh.co\" dir=\"ltr\">and continue through to the scheduled vote by the Republican-controlled FCC on Thursday<\/span>\u2014the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/newswire\/2017\/12\/11\/net-neutrality-defenders-plan-mass-online-protest-48-hours-fcc-vote\">Break the Internet<\/a>&#8221; protest is aimed at showing &#8220;the world what the web will look like without net neutrality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrations will vary widely, depending on the platform. &#8220;Facebook and LinkedIn users will &#8216;break&#8217; their profiles by changing their relationship status to &#8216;Married&#8217; (to net neutrality) or adding a new &#8216;job&#8217; of &#8216;Defending Net Neutrality,'&#8221; Fight for the Future\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/newswire\/2017\/12\/11\/net-neutrality-defenders-plan-mass-online-protest-48-hours-fcc-vote\">noted<\/a>\u00a0in a press release on Monday. &#8220;Websites and apps will participate by doing something to &#8216;break&#8217; their platform and encourage their users to contact Congress.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many major websites have been working in conjunction with activists to drive calls to Congress since the day Pai\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/11\/21\/internet-defenders-urge-mass-revolt-fight-fccs-scorched-earth-attack-net-neutrality\">unveiled<\/a>\u00a0his plan to eliminate net neutrality rules just before Thanksgiving.
