These methods are implemented to manipulate people without their awareness; often utilized to create a problem \u2014 in order to solve it. They were able to accrue four to five thousand pieces of data for 230 million adults in America.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\nAnd it\u2019s all legal.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\nAdded into the mix are data points that determine consumer and lifestyle behaviors, as well as political viewpoints. The personality traits of \u201copenness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism\u201d (OCEAN<\/a>) get calculated. \u201cBehavioral micro-targeting<\/a>\u00a0uncovers what \u201cmotivates\u201d individuals \u2014 to influence their vote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\nExpert\u00a0Michal Kosinski<\/a>\u00a0explains digital data and psychological profiling. However, if he went after wavering voters in key swing states, winning the Electoral College was attainable. The goal was to isolate conservative Democrats who might vote for Trump and geo-target them \u2014 down to their zip codes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\nLooking at Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, Cambridge Analytica concentrated on those undecideds by defining thirty-two personality types and determining which voters were the most vulnerable to Trump\u2019s messages of fear and anger.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\nTrump revisited those geographical areas before Election Day. Simultaneously, this demographic of anxious voters received personal messages on Facebook tailored explicitly to them. These \u201cdark posts\u201d disappeared hours after appearing in the specified user\u2019s timeline. When Donald Trump lost the popular vote by 3 million but won the Electoral College, the debate about our electoral system became more urgent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
On November 7, the\u00a0New York Times<\/em>\u00a0editorial board published the opinion piece, \u201cLet the People Pick the President<\/a>.\u201d It proposed the\u00a0National Popular Vote interstate compact<\/a>\u00a0as a solution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
Now, a new documentary, \u201cTrumping Democracy: Real $*Fake News*Your Data<\/a>,\u201d offers insights which not only a call into question the process and relevancy of the Electoral College, but points to disturbing factors brought on by the digital age.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
Director Thomas Huchon, a French journalist and documentary filmmaker, has drilled down on how unvetted information \u2014 and disinformation \u2014 can rapidly go viral on the Internet. His search, post-election, to understand how Trump captured the presidency, led him to examine cutting-age digital tools, dark money, and a network of interrelated players with common ideological goals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
At the center of this configuration is hedge-fund billionaire and computer scientist Robert Mercer. (His daughter\u00a0Rebekah<\/a>\u00a0went on to become a leader in the Trump transition team.)\u00a0Breitbart News<\/a>,\u00a0Steve Bannon<\/a>, and\u00a0KellyAnne Conway<\/a>\u00a0are planets in the constellation, along with\u00a0David Bossie<\/a>, known for his role as president of\u00a0Citizens United<\/a>. Mercer was a staunch supporter of altering campaign election funding rules, that for sixty years had reined in individual and corporate donations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
Huchon breaks\u00a0down his story into three chapters: Lies; Cover-Up; Manipulation. The first two sections review better known material. It is the final third of the film that connects the players in a way that is revelatory and alarming. Huchon taps a group of experts from the fields of journalism, political strategy, law and technology to deliver takeaways that are unsettling.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The narrative begins with a portrait of a New York Trump voter disgusted with \u201cmainstream media.\u201d He gets his news from online outlets, including \u201cpseudo-news\u201d sites that push stories like the bogus child sex trafficking ring of\u00a0#Pizzagate<\/a>\u00a0fame.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
Paul Horner<\/a>, \u201cfake news\u201d creator and prankster, is on hand to speak about fictitious stories he has posted. Disseminated by right wing outlets, Horner references a fictitious post he wrote that was\u00a0picked up by Eric Trump<\/a>, who retweeted it with the hashtag #CrookedHillary.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
The backstory of\u00a0Breitbart News<\/a>\u00a0is delineated and defined as a platform promoting anti-immigrant sentiment, misogyny, and white supremacist content. A graph depicts how the Breitbart readership expanded dramatically in 2017 during the months of October and November, from 45 million unique monthly users to over 100 million.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
Tad Devine<\/a>, political strategist, runs down the changed habits of how the public consumes news, unlike the days when three broadcasting stations delivered the nightly report. He emphasizes Trump\u2019s \u201cdelegitimization of the mainstream media.\u201d Pollster Ben Tulchin notes that Conservatives don\u2019t believe the reporting of the\u00a0New York Times<\/em>, the\u00a0Washington Post<\/em>, or CNN.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
As a candidate, Trump stated he would express the facts \u201cplainly and honestly.\u201d\u00a0 Yet, the nonpartisan fact-checking website\u00a0Politifact<\/a>\u00a0found differently. It showed that Trump\u2019s statements had a 4 percent veracity rate and that 33 percent of his assertions were actually false.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
FoxNews and Breitbart helped Trump to create and propagate his own truth. Trump painted himself as the sole person who could \u201cdrain the swamp\u201d and make America a \u201cwinner\u201d again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Meanwhile, behind the scenes, the reclusive Mercer took the opportunity to put his unlimited funds into the service of his extreme vision of limited government.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
This trail is fleshed out in the \u201ccover-up\u201d segment. No coincidence that the three entities in question share the same building address in Los Angeles. They are Breitbart News,\u00a0Glittering Steel Productions<\/a>, and the hedge fund\u00a0Renaissance Technologies<\/a>\u00a0\u2014where Mercer was co-CEO. (Note: Mercer has since\u00a0stepped down<\/a>.) At RenTech, Mercer used the trading algorithm he innovated to make a fortune. That mathematics\u00a0 morphed into a technology for other purposes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
Mercer has become a top billionaire on the political scene. Besides his own\u00a0family foundation<\/a>, he funds a host of conservative think tanks.\u00a0Guardian<\/em>\u00a0journalist\u00a0Carole Cadwalladr<\/a>\u00a0gives advice on how to get a clear picture of Mercer\u2019s game plan: \u201cFollow the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
Tax documents clearly map the recipients of Mercer\u2019s support. Unsurprisingly, the Heritage Foundation, the Media Research Center, the Government Accountability Institute, and the Heartland Institute are on the list. Mercer also\u00a0paid for an ad<\/a>\u00a0against the placement of a mosque near the World Trade Center locality.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
In 2011, Mercer invested $10 million in\u00a0Breibart News<\/em>, developing a designated media arm to promote his point of view. Steve Bannon took over the Breibart helm and publicly pronounced his goal of \u201cdeconstructing the government of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
As the 2016 election season geared up, Mercer backed Ted Cruz and put $13 million into Cruz\u2019s \u201cKeep the Promise\u201d campaign. As Trump decimated his opponents, Mercer shifted his allegiance to Trump \u2014 to the tune of $15 million.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
With major money invested in Trump, Mercer moved to take over the campaign reins in July of 2016. His daughter Rebekah met with Trump and offered more money \u2014along with the \u201ctalents\u201d of Bannon to spearhead the campaign. Conway, formerly on board the Mercer train for Cruz, and Bossie, joined the team.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Trump remaining unbeholden to outside interests was no longer remotely tenable. Key clues to the incestuous entanglements became clear when monies and paper trails became evident by looking at records filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC<\/a>). There were no payments in the Trump campaign for Bannon\u2019s salary. However, through a Mercer PAC, there are recurring payments to Glittering Steel, the company run by Bannon. In five months, the production company received $302,000.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
The\u00a0Campaign Legal Center<\/a>\u00a0has filed a complaint maintaining that Glittering Steel is a front for Bannon, while noting that Mercer\u2019s company and Breitbart News are in the same office building.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
The third, and most powerful section, is what Huchon has been building toward. He tracks back to his original query: How did Trump win the election?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
That piece of the puzzle begins with the London firm, Strategic Communications Library (SCL<\/a>). Their mission is to evaluate data to determine \u201cwhat impacts people and how they think.\u201d It\u2019s known as \u00a0\u201cPsychological operations (PSYOP).\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
SCL claims they provide \u201cbehavioral influence planning and evaluation\u201d for clients who want to \u201cinfluence or treat a problem.\u201d It references a roster of clients like NATO, the British Ministry of Defense, the NSA, and the U.S. State Department. They polish their creds with the example of how their tactics helped to advance \u201chealthcare in Ghana.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The flip side isn\u2019t as magnanimous. These methods are implemented to manipulate people without their awareness; often utilized to create a problem \u2014 in order to solve it. Instigated to organize\u00a0protests in Nigeria in 2007<\/a>, as Cadwalladr pointed out, \u201cIt\u2019s been used by authoritarian regimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
SCL started a \u201csubsidiary\u201d branch to manage data in 2013 called\u00a0Cambridge Analytica<\/a>. They set up shop in the United States and partnered with Mercer. Bannon became Vice President. Their tagline was, \u201cThe right message in front of the right person at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
Cambridge Analytica employed \u201cdata-modeling\u201d by taking readily available personal data off the web (age, income, address, religion, gun ownership), as well as buying it from banks, credit card companies, and the social media giants Google, Facebook, and Twitter. They were able to accrue four to five thousand pieces of data for 230 million adults in America.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
And it\u2019s all legal.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
Added into the mix are data points that determine consumer and lifestyle behaviors, as well as political viewpoints. The personality traits of \u201copenness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism\u201d (OCEAN<\/a>) get calculated. \u201cBehavioral micro-targeting<\/a>\u00a0uncovers what \u201cmotivates\u201d individuals \u2014 to influence their vote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
Expert\u00a0Michal Kosinski<\/a>\u00a0explains digital data and psychological profiling. He created a test specifically for Facebook, and explained how Facebook \u201cLikes\u201d can create an accurate assessment of a subject\u2019s religious views, politics, sexual orientation, personality and intelligence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
Cambridge Analytica offered their services to Trump, who was not interested until he learned they had worked on the successful\u00a0Brexit initiative<\/a>. The two parties connected in June 2016. By the end of July, Trump had forked over $6 million to Cambridge Analytica. Another $5 million would be forthcoming.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
What did these dollars buy? A tactic based on the realization that Trump didn\u2019t have a shot at winning the popular vote. However, if he went after wavering voters in key swing states, winning the Electoral College was attainable. The goal was to isolate conservative Democrats who might vote for Trump and geo-target them \u2014 down to their zip codes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Looking at Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, Cambridge Analytica concentrated on those undecideds by defining thirty-two personality types and determining which voters were the most vulnerable to Trump\u2019s messages of fear and anger.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Trump revisited those geographical areas before Election Day. Simultaneously, this demographic of anxious voters received personal messages on Facebook tailored explicitly to them. These \u201cdark posts\u201d disappeared hours after appearing in the specified user\u2019s timeline. They remain untraceable and without any record \u2014 except on Facebook\u2019s server.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
It worked. Trump got 77,000 votes from those three swing states.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cTrumping Democracy\u201d was first released in France in June 2017. During production, Cambridge Analytica refused all requests for interviews.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
