REUTERS\/Carlos Barria<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despite benefitting the most from taxes, people in many of the United States\u2019 poorest regions appear to oppose federal spending due to bigotry.<\/p>\n<p>A study published in the\u00a0American Politics Research journal and summarized in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/product\/research-opposition-to-federal-spending-is-driven-by-racial-resentment\/H03VKC-PDF-ENG?referral=03069\">Harvard Business Review<\/a>\u00a0reveals that conventional wisdom that places poor white Republicans in states that receive tax benefits against Democrats in states that pay higher taxes to benefit those in poverty \u201cis not supported by evidence,\u201d thus creating what the researchers referred to as a \u201cfederal spending paradox.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This paradox led researchers to delve into three factors: \u201cparty identification, ideology, and racial resentment.\u201d They defined racial resentment as \u201ca post-Civil-Rights-era view rooted in the denial of continuing discrimination against African Americans, doubts about their work ethic, and resistance to government efforts to reduce racial inequalities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs one might have guessed from the racial undertones often present in public discussions on fiscal politics, greater racial resentment was associated with lower support for spending,\u201d the report noted. \u201cThis remained true even when we accounted for other demographic and political characteristics, such as gender, race, age, education, income, party identification, ideology, and so on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact,\u201d it continued, \u201cracial resentment was far more powerful in predicting opposition to federal spending than economic self-interest was \u2014 for example, it was four times stronger than income.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NOOR AL-SIBAI 02 JAN 2018\u00a0(rawstory.com) Local residents react as U.S. President Donald Trump arrives at a rally in Huntington, West Virginia, U.S., August 3, 2017.
