In December he told the Guardian that in his approach to researching the book he had been \u201cnot particularly hostile\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat allowed me to get them to be relatively open,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-1 | 1\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item \">\n<div class=\"rich-link__container\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__image-container u-responsive-ratio\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/2cd0eae61900631614b191d088ab679ab8e44f33\/0_117_3500_2100\/master\/3500.jpg?w=460&amp;q=55&amp;auto=format&amp;usm=12&amp;fit=max&amp;s=5fdb277633a30fe62986680f58b0a320\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-link__header\">\n<h3 class=\"rich-link__title\"><em><a class=\"rich-link__link\">Trump hits back at Steve Bannon: &#8216;When he was fired, he lost his mind&#8217;<\/a><\/em><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Among other things, the book reveals that former Trump campaign chair and White House strategist\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/steve-bannon\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Steve Bannon<\/a>\u00a0believes an infamous June 2016 meeting between Donald Trump Jr, Jared Kushner, Paul Manafort and Russians offering incriminating information about Hillary Clinton at Trump Tower was \u201ctreasonous\u201d, \u201cunpatriotic\u201d and \u201cbad shit\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Bannon also reportedly believes that\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/donaldtrump\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0knew of the meeting and met the Russians involved \u2013 the president has denied this \u2013 saying: \u201cThe chance that Don Jr did not walk these jumos up to his father\u2019s office on the 26th floor is zero.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wolff also reports a conversation between the president-elect and Rupert Murdoch about immigration policy that allegedly led the media mogul to label Trump \u201ca<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2018\/jan\/03\/rupert-murdoch-trump-idiot-phone-call-immigration\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">\u00a0fucking idiot<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The revelations drew a remarkably forceful White House statement, in which Trump said: \u201cWhen he was fired he not only lost his job, he lost his mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By any standard, Wolff\u2019s book has had an extraordinary impact for an as yet unpublished work.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"element element-atom element-atom--media\" data-atom-id=\"01cc1cca-44f2-40f4-bd47-fa84e0e12ba3\" data-atom-type=\"media\">\n<div class=\"u-responsive-ratio u-responsive-ratio--hd youtube-media-atom\" data-media-atom-id=\"01cc1cca-44f2-40f4-bd47-fa84e0e12ba3\" data-unique-atom-id=\"01cc1cca-44f2-40f4-bd47-fa84e0e12ba3\/0\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"youtube-y7iZ5j9McZs\/0\" class=\"youtube-media-atom__iframe youtube__video-ready\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y7iZ5j9McZs?enablejsapi=1&amp;rel=0&amp;showinfo=0&amp;origin=https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div class=\"vjs-big-play-button youtube-media-atom__overlay\"><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"caption caption--img caption caption--img\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here are some other highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The president\u2019s daughter and son-in-law, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, reportedly made a deal about which of them would one day run for president. Wolff writes: \u201cThe first woman president, Ivanka entertained, would not be Hillary Clinton; it would be Ivanka Trump.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Of Bannon\u2019s activities after leaving the White House, Wolff writes: \u201cBannon was telling people something else: he, Steve Bannon, was going to run for president. The locution, \u2018If I were president \u2026\u2019 was turning into, \u2018When I am president \u2026\u2019\u201d Wolff also writes that Bannon has courted top Republican donors, \u201cdoing his best, as he put it, to \u2018kiss the ass and pay homage to all the gray-beards\u2019\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Infighting among staff reportedly often featured a group including Kushner, Ivanka and the economics adviser Gary Cohn against a faction led by Bannon. Wolff quotes Richard Nixon\u2019s national security adviser, Henry Kissinger, as saying: \u201cIt is a war between the Jews and the non-Jews.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Wolff writes that\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/hes-better-than-this-says-thomas-barrack-trumps-loyal-whisperer\/2017\/10\/10\/067fc776-a215-11e7-8cfe-d5b912fabc99_story.html?utm_term=.047c6a5bdd70\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Thomas Barrack Jr,<\/a>\u00a0a billionaire who is one of the president\u2019s oldest associates and was reportedly wanted by Trump to be his chief of staff, allegedly told a friend: \u201cHe\u2019s not only crazy, he\u2019s stupid.\u201d On Wednesday, Barrack\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/maggieNYT\/status\/948570026902196225\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">denied<\/a>\u00a0saying that.<\/li>\n<li>Asked by Fox News chief executive Roger Ailes what Trump had \u201cgotten himself into with the Russians\u201d, Wolff writes, Bannon answered: \u201cMostly, he went to Russia and he thought he was going to meet Putin. But Putin couldn\u2019t give a shit about him. So he\u2019s kept trying.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In discussing whom to appoint as Trump\u2019s national security adviser, Wolff writes, Ailes promoted the former United Nations ambassador John Bolton, whom he reportedly called \u201ca bomb thrower\u201d and \u201ca strange little fucker\u201d. Bannon, however, reportedly counselled that Bolton\u2019s moustache would be \u201ca problem\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>No one in the Trump campaign expected to win the presidency, Wolff writes, and most including Trump saw his run as leverage for careers in television or politics. Melania Trump, Wolff claims, was horrified by the prospect of victory. When on election night it became clear Trump could indeed beat Clinton and take the White House, according to the book \u201cMelania was in tears \u2013 and not of joy\u201d. The first lady\u2019s communications director rejected that account and said: \u201cThe book is clearly going to be sold in the bargain fiction section.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Trump\u2019s first Muslim travel ban, issued to\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2017\/jan\/28\/federal-judge-stays-deportations-trump-muslim-executive-order\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">chaos and protest at airports across the US<\/a>, caused consternation among White House staff. Bannon reportedly said the ban was published late on a Friday precisely to anger and provoke liberals, \u201cso the snowflakes would show up at the airports and riot\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Trump reportedly argued with the Secret Service over whether he could have a lock on his bedroom \u2013 \u201cthe first time since the Kennedy White House that a presidential couple had maintained separate rooms\u201d, Wolff writes \u2013 and told housekeeping he would strip his own bed and leave his shirts on the floor. Wolff also says the president, who is known to fear being poisoned, told no one to touch his toothbrush.<\/li>\n<li>Kushner reportedly offered to marry the TV hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough \u2013 then lunch dates for Trump, now regular critics \u2013 because he said he was \u201can internet Unitarian minister\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Disloyalty among the president\u2019s staff was reportedly mirrored by the president himself. Wolff says Trump called Bannon disloyal and scruffy, Priebus weak and short, Kushner a suck-up, press secretary Sean Spicer stupid and adviser Kellyanne Conway a crybaby.
