Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/11\/27\/sanders-seen-top-2020-contender-recent-moves-spark-campaign-suspicions\">said<\/a>\u00a0he is not taking a 2020 presidential run &#8220;off the table,&#8221; but he has declined to comment any further on his plans beyond this year&#8217;s relection campaign for the U.S. Senate.\u00a0(Photo: AP\/Jacquelyn Martin\/Seth Wenig\/Photo montage by\u00a0Salon)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In spite of his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/12\/16\/donald-j-trump-least-popular-first-year-president-record\">record low approval ratings<\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/08\/23\/loser-2020-trump-vs-sanders-match-bernie-beats-donald-bigly\">series of polls<\/a>\u00a0that peg him as the loser in the next presidential race, President Donald Trump reportedly believes that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)\u2014who is seen as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/11\/27\/sanders-seen-top-2020-contender-recent-moves-spark-campaign-suspicions\">a top challenger<\/a>\u00a0to Trump in 2020 and currently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/08\/25\/bernie-sanders-nations-highest-profile-socialist-once-again-voted-most-popular\">the most popular politician<\/a>\u00a0in the country\u2014is not &#8220;a serious threat and would be easy to beat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Politico\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/01\/15\/trump-democrats-2020-election-340623\">reported<\/a>\u00a0late Monday that Trump had recently shared this view with &#8220;a Republican with close ties to the White House.&#8221; The 71-year-old president&#8217;s conclusion wasn&#8217;t based on politics; according to the anonymous Republican, &#8220;Trump was hung up on Sanders&#8217; age, arguing that Sanders, now 76, wouldn&#8217;t have the energy to run another national campaign.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Trump also brushed off a potential challenge from Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), a frequent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/11\/27\/trump-uses-disgustingly-racist-pocahontas-slur-event-honoring-native-americans\">target<\/a>\u00a0of the president&#8217;s public attacks.\u00a0&#8220;He&#8217;s always asking people, &#8216;Who do you think is going to run against me?'&#8221; the\u00a0<em>Politico<\/em>\u00a0source said of Trump. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think he sees anyone, right now, being a serious competitor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The report comes as Trump&#8217;s approval rating remains below 40 percent,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/201617\/gallup-daily-trump-job-approval.aspx\">according to\u00a0<\/a>Gallup.<\/p>\n<p>Although recent\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rabaresearch.com\/\">polling<\/a>\u00a0focused on the 2020 race has shown former Vice President Joe Biden winning over more Democratic voters than Sanders or Warren\u2014with media icon\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/01\/09\/praise-inspiring-speech-progressives-warn-against-folly-oprah-2020-calls\">Oprah Winfrey<\/a>\u00a0also beating out Warren\u2014since the fall of 2017,\u00a0the senators have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/08\/23\/loser-2020-trump-vs-sanders-match-bernie-beats-donald-bigly\">consistently<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/07\/18\/against-warren-or-sanders-2020-looks-lot-losing-trump\">defeated<\/a>\u00a0Trump in polls that pit them against the president. A November\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/morningconsult.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/171109_crosstabs_Politico_v1_AP-2-1.pdf\">poll<\/a>\u00a0(pdf) had Sanders leading Trump 42 to 36 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/11\/27\/sanders-seen-top-2020-contender-recent-moves-spark-campaign-suspicions\">said<\/a>\u00a0he is not taking a 2020 presidential run &#8220;off the table,&#8221; but he has declined to comment any further on his plans beyond this year&#8217;s relection campaign for the U.S. Senate.
