(Photo:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/becker271\/28439652652\/in\/album-72157671772564416\/\">Becker1999<\/a>\/Flickr\/cc)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p>More than 100 cities across the globe are now mostly powered by renewable energy, a number that has more than doubled over the past three years, according to a review of environmental data collected from entities worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The new analysis, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdp.net\/en\/cities\/world-renewable-energy-cities\">tally<\/a>\u00a0of information collected by the U.K.-based group CDP and released Tuesday, accounts for towns and cities that get at least 70 percent of their electricity from renewable sources such as wind and solar. In addition to publishing its complete list, the group created an interactive map that features key details about some municipalities&#8217; transitions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed\" align=\"center\" data-src=\"story\/2741\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/story\/2741\/embed?auto=1\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div><a class=\"flourish-credit\" href=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/story\/2741\/?utm_source=showcase&amp;utm_campaign=story\/2741\" target=\"_top\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.rocks\/resources\/made_with_flourish.svg\" alt=\"Made with Flourish\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>While only four U.S. cities made the list\u2014Aspen, Colorado; Burlington, Vermont; Eugene, Oregon; and Seattle, Washington\u2014the group says 58 localities in the United States have committed to a full transition. Among the largest cities on CDP&#8217;s list are Auckland, New Zealand; Nairobi, Kenya; Oslo, Norway; and Vancouver, Canada. Forty-seven of the cities listed are located in Brazil. Reassuringly, our data shows much commitment and ambition,&#8221; said Kyra Appleby, CDP&#8217;s director of cities. &#8220;Cities not only want to shift to renewable energy but, most importantly\u2014they can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The new data reflects the rapidly growing trend to commit to a renewable energy transition at a local level. CDP noted in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdp.net\/en\/\/articles\/cities\/over-100-global-cities-get-majority-of-electricity-from-renewables\">statement<\/a>\u00a0that Tuesday&#8217;s analysis &#8220;comes on the same day the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uk100.org\/\">UK100<\/a>\u00a0network of local government leaders announce that over 80 UK towns and cities have committed to 100 percent clean energy by 2050, including Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Glasgow, and 16 London boroughs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The group attributed the rising excitement about energy transitions in part to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalcovenantofmayors.org\/\">Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy<\/a>, which claims to be &#8220;the broadest global alliance committed to climate leadership, building on the commitment of over 7,400 cities and local governments from six continents and 121 countries representing more than 600 million residents.&#8221; The alliance\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2017\/jun\/28\/global-covenant-mayors-cities-vow-to-meet-obama-climate-commitments\">launched<\/a>\u00a0last summer, after U.S. President Donald Trump\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/06\/01\/destructive-fossil-fuel-puppet-trump-ditches-climate-deal-fact-free-speech\">revealed<\/a>\u00a0his intention to withdraw from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/paris-agreement\">Paris Climate Agreement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The transition trend is being driven not only by a widespread desire to eliminate the use of oil and gas\u2014which is fueling the global climate crisis\u2014but also by economic arguments.
