(Photo:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/act.freepress.net\/sign\/mayorsfornetneutrality\/\">Free Press<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/02\/27\/dont-agonize-organize-internet-defenders-erupt-kill-fccs-plan-kill-net-neutrality\">advocacy groups<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/01\/16\/pressure-working-senate-just-one-gop-vote-away-passing-bill-save-net-neutrality\">open internet defenders in Congress<\/a>\u00a0continue their efforts to repeal the Republican-controlled FCC&#8217;s attack on net neutrality, the mayors of 11 cities have signed a new pledge vowing to refuse to do business with internet service providers that don&#8217;t support net neutrality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pullquote\">&#8220;We will not do business with any vendor that does not honor net neutrality. We need to name and shame any company that doesn&#8217;t honor net neutrality.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2014Bill de Blasio, New York City mayor<\/p>\n<p>Titled the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSctOwOuAZajo8BgYGzM4l0WemNeyBFnURoNWPg44971caMcuQ\/viewform\">Cities Open Internet Pledge<\/a>\u00a0(pdf), the initiative was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/statescoop.com\/mayors-refuse-business-with-anti-net-neutrality-vendors-in-open-internet-pledge\">first introduced<\/a>\u00a0by the mayors of New York City, Austin, and Portland, Oregon on Sunday during the South by Southwest conference in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will not do business with any vendor that does not honor net neutrality,&#8221; New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said during a panel discussion. &#8220;We need to name and shame any company that doesn&#8217;t honor net neutrality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Since Sunday, eight more mayors have signaled their support for the pledge, which calls on cities to only work with internet companies &#8220;that do not block, throttle, or provide paid prioritization of content on sites that cities run to provide critical services and information to their residents.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We each commit our city to take all available steps to ensure the internet remains open and to keep gatekeepers from throttling, blocking, or limiting government content on the internet to the extent permitted by law and within our control,&#8221; the pledge reads.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By signing the Cities Open Internet Pledge, mayors are posing a direct challenge to the FCC&#8217;s wrong-headed decision to gut net neutrality protections,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/newswire\/2018\/03\/12\/more-mayors-sign-pledge-protect-net-neutrality-refusing-do-business-internet\">said<\/a>\u00a0Timothy Karr, senior director of strategy for Free Press, which teamed up with the coalition of mayors to launch\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freepress.net\/press-release\/108681\/more-mayors-sign-pledge-protect-net-neutrality-refusing-do-business-internet\">MayorsForNetNeutrality.org<\/a>, where supporters of net neutrality can sign a petition calling on city leaders to sign the new pledge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Town by town, city by city, local leaders are taking back everyone&#8217;s right to connect and communicate,&#8221; Karr added in a statement on Monday. &#8220;They&#8217;re saying that access to an open internet is vital to the livelihood of cities and their inhabitants.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The new initiative comes as the FCC&#8217;s attack on net neutrality\u2014spearheaded by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2017\/12\/14\/fcc-chair-ajit-pai-shows-just-how-dumb-he-thinks-americans-are-video-mocking-net\">agency chair and former Verizon lawyer Ajit Pai<\/a>\u2014is facing challenges on numerous fronts. As\u00a0<em>Common Dreams<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/03\/06\/larger-battle-rages-washington-enacts-first-state-law-protect-net-neutrality\">reported<\/a>, Washington last week became the first state in the nation to implement a law protecting net neutrality from the federal rollback.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate, meanwhile, needs just\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/02\/26\/operation-onemorevote-future-net-neutrality-stake-major-websites-mobilize-internet\">one more vote\u00a0<\/a>to pass a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/views\/2017\/12\/13\/congress-has-one-shot-truly-restore-net-neutrality\">Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution<\/a>\u00a0that would restore net neutrality by repealing the FCC&#8217;s rule.
