staff attorney Sarah Hinger\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/blog\/free-speech\/rights-protesters\/schools-should-use-walkouts-protest-gun-violence-teaching-moment\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0for the ACLU&#8217;s blog on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Public school is the place where students experience and interact with government, learn through discussion and debate with other students from differing backgrounds, and build the foundation for participation in a democratic society,&#8221; Hinger noted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rather than seeking to silence students&#8217; political engagement and quashing their desire for conversation,&#8221; she concluded, &#8220;schools can approach this moment as an opportunity for learning about civic action.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The students, who\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.womensmarch.com\/enough\/\">plan to walk out<\/a>\u00a0of classrooms across the country at 10 am local time despite\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/03\/01\/amid-threats-discipline-hundreds-colleges-assure-prospective-students-anti-gun\">disciplinary threats<\/a>\u00a0from administrators, are pushing for real solutions to gun violence in the form of state and federal legislation. Organizers are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.womensmarch.com\/enough-toolkit\">encouraging<\/a>parents, teachers, and school staff to participate.<\/p>\n<p>The ACLU hosted a question-and-answer session on Tumblr Tuesday to provide input on students&#8217; protest rights:<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, in response to threats from high school administrations, the group also livestreamed a video tutorial on student rights:<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Q6ghXMtooV8?rel=0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Wednesday&#8217;s walkout is just part of a national\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/02\/21\/neveragain-parkland-students-lead-thousands-rally-demand-gun-control-legislation\">student-led movement<\/a>\u00a0for gun safety.
