But the president\u2019s remarks about players who were kneeling during the anthem had catalyzed a level of public hostility that the N.F.L. had never experienced. In the spirit of partnership at the meeting, the owners decided that they and the players should sit in alternating seats around the large table, which featured an N.F.L. logo in the middle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"109\" data-total-count=\"801\">\u201cLet\u2019s make sure that we keep this confidential,\u201d Commissioner Roger Goodell said to begin the session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"375\" data-total-count=\"1176\">The New York Times has obtained an audio recording of the roughly three-hour meeting, and several people in the room corroborated details of the gathering. After discussing a proposal to finance nonprofit groups to address player concerns, they wanted to talk about why Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback who started the anthem protests to highlight social injustice and police brutality against African-Americans, was, they believed, being blackballed by the owners. The owners sounded panicked about their business under attack, and wanted to focus on damage control.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-body-supplemental\">\n<div class=\"story-body story-body-2\">\n<p id=\"story-continues-4\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"180\" data-total-count=\"1903\">\u201cIf he was on a roster right now, all this negativeness and divisiveness could be turned into a positive,\u201d Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Chris Long said at the meeting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"302\" data-total-count=\"2205\">Long said he did not wish to \u201clecture any team\u201d on what quarterbacks to sign, but \u201cwe all agree in this room as players that he should be on a roster.\u201d The owners\u2019 responses were noncommittal. The Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said that fighting for social justice is not \u201cabout one person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"93\" data-total-count=\"2298\">The New England Patriots owner Robert K. Kraft pointed to another \u201celephant in the room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"29\" data-total-count=\"2327\">\u201cThis kneeling,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"253\" data-total-count=\"2580\">\u201cThe problem we have is, we have a president who will use that as fodder to do his mission that I don\u2019t feel is in the best interests of America,\u201d said Kraft, who is a longtime supporter of Mr. Trump\u2019s. \u201cIt\u2019s divisive and it\u2019s horrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"294\" data-total-count=\"2874\">The owners were intent on finding a way to avoid Trump\u2019s continued criticism. The president\u2019s persistent jabs on Twitter had turned many fans against the league. Lurie, who called Trump\u2019s presidency \u201cdisastrous,\u201d cautioned against players getting drawn into the president\u2019s tactics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"153\" data-total-count=\"3027\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got to be careful not to be baited by Trump or whomever else,\u201d Lurie said. \u201cWe have to find a way to not be divided and not get baited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-5\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"361\" data-total-count=\"3388\">The Buffalo Bills owner Terry Pegula sounded anguished over the uncertainty of when Trump would take another shot at the league. \u201cAll Donald needs to do is to start to do this again,\u201d Pegula said. \u201cWe need some kind of immediate plan because of what\u2019s going on in society. All of us now, we need to put a Band-Aid on what\u2019s going on in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"145\" data-total-count=\"3533\">The Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shahid Khan countered that the worst was behind them. \u201cAll the damage Trump\u2019s going to do is done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"225\" data-total-count=\"3758\">The owners kept returning to one bottom-line issue: Large numbers of fans and sponsors had become angry about the protests. Boycotts had been threatened and jerseys burned and \u2014 most worrisome \u2014 TV ratings were declining.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsletter-promo\" class=\"newsletter-signup variant-1-hidden \" data-newsletter-productcode=\"MSB\" data-newsletter-producttitle=\"MSB\" aria-labeledby=\"newsletter-promo-heading\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"339\" data-total-count=\"4097\">Pegula complained that the league was \u201cunder assault.\u201d He unloaded a dizzying flurry of nautical metaphors to describe their predicament. \u201cTo me, this is like a glacier moving into the ocean,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re getting hit with a tsunami.\u201d He expressed his wish that the league never be \u201ca glacier crawling into the ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"311\" data-total-count=\"4408\">The Houston Texans owner Bob McNair was more direct. He urged the players to tell their colleagues to, essentially, knock off the kneeling. \u201cYou fellas need to ask your compadres, fellas, stop that other business, let\u2019s go out and do something that really produces positive results, and we\u2019ll help you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"250\" data-total-count=\"4658\">After the Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross raised the idea of a \u201cmarch on Washington\u201d by N.F.L. players and owners, Eric Reid, Kaepernick\u2019s former teammate and the first player to kneel alongside him, brought the discussion back to Kaepernick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"142\" data-total-count=\"4800\">Reid, who attended the meeting wearing a Kaepernick T-shirt over his dress shirt and tie, said that his former teammate was being blackballed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"media-100000005868349\" class=\"media photo embedded layout-large-vertical media-100000005868349\" role=\"group\" data-media-action=\"modal\" aria-label=\"media\"><span class=\"visually-hidden\">Photo<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"image\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-viewer-candidate\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2018\/04\/26\/sports\/26nfl-kaepernick\/26nfl-kaepernick-blog427.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-mediaviewer-src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2018\/04\/26\/sports\/26nfl-kaepernick\/26nfl-kaepernick-superJumbo.jpg\" data-mediaviewer-caption=\"Colin Kaepernick in 2016.\" data-mediaviewer-credit=\"Ted S. Warren\/Associated Press<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"318\" data-total-count=\"5118\">\u201cI feel like he was hung out to dry,\u201d Reid said of Kaepernick. \u201cEveryone in here is talking about how much they support us.\u201d The room fell quiet. \u201cNobody stepped up and said we support Colin\u2019s right to do this. We all let him become Public Enemy No. 1 in this country, and he still doesn\u2019t have a job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-6\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"328\" data-total-count=\"5446\">Pegula offered that he thought the league was battling a perception and \u201cmedia problem.\u201d He said it would be great for the league to find a compelling spokesman \u2014 preferably a player \u2014 to promote all of the good things they were doing together. He suggested that the league could learn from the gun lobby in this regard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"139\" data-total-count=\"5585\">\u201cFor years we\u2019ve watched the National Rifle Association use Charlton Heston as a figurehead,\u201d Pegula said. \u201cWe need a spokesman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"232\" data-total-count=\"5817\">Anquan Boldin, a former N.F.L. wide receiver who was at the meeting, said that owners needed to be spokesmen, too. \u201cLetting people know it\u2019s not just the players that care about these issues, but the owners, too,\u201d Boldin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"158\" data-total-count=\"5975\">Pegula didn\u2019t address Boldin\u2019s point except to add that it would be important for the spokesman to be black. (None of the owners in the N.F.L. are black.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"150\" data-total-count=\"6125\">\u201cFor us to have a face, as an African-American, at least a face that could be in the media,\u201d Pegula continued, \u201cwe could fall in behind that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"170\" data-total-count=\"6295\">Kaepernick\u2019s name was not mentioned again. He continues to pursue a labor grievance accusing the owners of colluding to keep him out of the league. He remains unsigned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"319\" data-total-count=\"6614\">Before the meeting ended, owners had quoted Thomas Paine (the Falcons owner Arthur Blank), invoked Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s Selma march (Ross of the Dolphins) and expressed great hope for what they all could accomplish together (\u201cWe have a chance to do something monumental,\u201d declared the Giants owner John Mara).<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"273\" data-total-count=\"6887\">The meeting concluded with some participants saying how positive the session had been, and how they would all keep talking. Goodell told the group that another meeting was being scheduled. They planned to issue a \u201cjoint statement\u201d to underscore their shared commitment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-7\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"230\" data-total-count=\"7117\">Kraft said the statement should reflect how everyone had come together for a good cause. \u201cIt would be good if you could work in the word \u2018unified\u2019 or \u2018unity\u2019 in some fashion,\u201d he said, referring to the joint statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"147\" data-total-count=\"7264\">\u201cWe could say simply, today we had a reset, and the players\u2019 issues are our issues, and we recognize them and will work together,\u201d Ross said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"112\" data-total-count=\"7376\">\u201cI like the language of \u2018our issues,\u2019\u201d said DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the players\u2019 union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"61\" data-total-count=\"7437\">About an hour later, the league released its joint statement:<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"438\" data-total-count=\"7875\">\u201cToday owners and players had a productive meeting focused on how we can work together to promote positive social change and address inequality in our communities. NFL executives and owners joined NFLPA executives and player leaders to review and discuss plans to utilize our platform to promote equality and effectuate positive change.
