(Photo: @H_Town_74\/@SiriouslySusan\/Twitter)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<div>\n<p><span id=\":ms.co\" class=\"tL8wMe EMoHub\" dir=\"ltr\">As Georgia&#8217;s Democratic candidate for governor, Stacey Abrams, called for voters in her state to fight Republican efforts at voter suppression by showing up at polls in large numbers in next month&#8217;s election, a national grassroots group reported Secretary of State Brian Kemp\u2014also the GOP&#8217;s gubernatorial candidate\u2014to the Justice Department late Wednesday night for blatantly violating the Voting Rights Act in order to swing the upcoming election in his own favor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Democratic Coalition is among those that have expressed outrage over a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/elections\/suppression-critics-charge-georgia-gop-gov-candidate-purging-voters-election-n918761\">massive voter purge<\/a>\u00a0in the state which has disproportionately affected black voters, just before residents prepare to choose between Abrams\u2014who would be the country&#8217;s first black female governor\u2014and Kemp himself in the November 6 election.<\/p>\n<p><em>Esquire<\/em>\u00a0political columnist Charles P. Pierce\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/news-politics\/politics\/a23711003\/georgia-governor-voter-suppression-brian-kemp-stacey-abrams\/\">called<\/a>\u00a0the Abrams-Kemp race &#8220;ground zero in the battle American democracy,&#8221; and tweeted that outside observers should be present on Election Day in Georgia to ensure the vote is legitimate\u2014as they would in fledgling democracies overseas.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\":n2.co\" class=\"tL8wMe EMoHub\" dir=\"ltr\">An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgiademocrat.org\/2018\/10\/new-associated-press-report-over-53000-voter-registrations-held-up-by-brian-kemps-office-over-suppressive-exact-match-policy-nearly-70-percent-of-registrations-are-from-african-american-georg\/\">analysis\u00a0<\/a>by the\u00a0<em>Associated Press<\/em>\u00a0estimates that Kemp, whose office oversees the state&#8217;s elections and voter registration, has purged 53,000 registrants from the rolls by exploiting a 2013 &#8220;exact match&#8221; rule that states voters&#8217; application forms must exactly match Georgia&#8217;s existing state records for every resident. Seventy percent of those registrations now listed as &#8220;pending&#8221; as a result of the law, the\u00a0<em>AP\u00a0<\/em>found, belong to African-Americans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0<em>MSNBC<\/em>&#8216;s &#8220;Morning Joe&#8221; on Thursday, Abrams said she was &#8220;deeply worried&#8221; that many Georgia voters &#8220;will be disenfranchised in this election&#8221;\u2014<span id=\":n4.co\" class=\"tL8wMe EMoHub\" dir=\"ltr\">by the actions that Kemp has taken.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want people to understand that voter suppression has two effects,&#8221; Abrams said. &#8220;One is to stop people from voting, but the other is to scare people out of voting and I do not want them to have the effect on either side.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0jQd8nveOL0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The voter purge is just Kemp&#8217;s latest attempt to disenfranchise voters in Georgia, Abrams added, noting that she led a lawsuit against him four years ago over the &#8220;exact match&#8221; law, forcing his to reinstate 33,000 canceled voter registrations. In August, as\u00a0<em>Common Dreams<\/em>\u00a0reported, the Randolph County Board of Elections\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/08\/24\/victory-georgia-county-election-officials-nix-black-voter-suppression-plan\">rejected<\/a>\u00a0the state&#8217;s proposal to close more than three-quarters of the majority-black county&#8217;s polling places.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\":ns.co\" class=\"tL8wMe EMoHub\" dir=\"ltr\">Noting that she plans to continue her earlier legal battle against Kemp&#8217;s suppression efforts, Abrams urged Georgians to go to the polls in huge numbers as a way to counteract the impact of those whose names have been purged.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have enough registered voters in Georgia to win this election,&#8221; Abrams said. &#8220;We&#8217;ve added new voter registrants, in fact, 250,000 new registrants are on the rolls being processed right now.
