Back in January, California lawmakers chose to delay a vote on CalCare, the bill that would establish a guaranteed, single-payer health care system for all California residents. The result was that CalCare was unable to move forward by its legislative deadline this year.
This decision was extremely disappointing, but we know two things for sure if we want to win in 2023:
- We need to start early: We’ll have another chance to pass CalCare in 2023 when the legislature reconvenes, which means we need to get to work now to build the support necessary to win.
- We need to scale up our efforts as much as possible for the rest of this year: In order to overcome the opposition of the for-profit health care industry, we need to substantially grow the number of people who are involved. We’ve made great progress, but we need more Californians actively engaged in the fight to win CalCare.
That’s why we’re starting to lay the groundwork now to pass single-payer guaranteed health care in California in 2023 – and we need you with us, Mike.
The success of this campaign depends on how many people are willing to step up and commit to doing this important work, Mike. We’re so grateful to you and everyone who has helped get us to this point.
Together, we got CalCare passed through the Assembly Health Committee and the Appropriations Committee. We received the support of key leaders in the Assembly like Speaker Anthony Rendon and Health Committee Chair Jim Wood for the first time ever.
We texted 3.7 million voters across California and made nearly 70,000 phone calls. We organized locally in dozens of districts up and down the state with the help of volunteer District Leaders. We held multiple massive statewide days of action. And with your help, a new generation of CalCare Champions are one step closer to heading to the state legislature. We know we can win.
California can lead the way for the rest of the country in 2023, but to do so we need to make sure that every single legislator knows that Californians demand health care justice and are ready to lead the way for the rest of the country. We have to start that work now.
