CalCare - California Guaranteed Health Care for All

In case you don’t know me, I’m Ady Barkan, a longtime ally and partner of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United. After I was diagnosed with ALS in 2016, I co-founded Be A Hero and dedicated my life to fighting for Medicare for All and health care justice.

Last month, when the California Guaranteed Health Care for All Act, A.B. 1400, was introduced, I knew I had to do my part as a resident of Santa Barbara to demand that my city officials and state legislators support the movement to end our for-profit health care system.

I joined CNA’s statewide day of action to officially launch the California Guaranteed Health Care for All (CalCare) campaign by attending a car caravan with fellow activists and neighbors. We came together to make sure our voices were heard — calling for guaranteed, quality health care, free at the point of service. And we made an immediate impact.

Shortly after seeing our action and hearing testimonies from residents, including myself, the Santa Barbara City Council unanimously passed a resolution in support of CalCare. Wahoo! But our work is far from over: Now, we need more cities to follow suit. Why? Because these resolutions help us to put even more pressure on our state representatives to support A.B. 1400.

Local organizing is key to winning this fight — and we need you to step up to advocate for a city resolution in San Francisco.

This Thursday, March 11, at 5:00 PM, CNA is hosting a training to teach you how to pass a CalCare resolution in San Francisco. Can we count on you to attend the training this Thursday so we can get even more city councils across California to support the California Guaranteed Health Care for All Act?

In this training, you’ll learn how to advocate in your community to get your city council on board, and how we can use that power to pressure our state legislature.

Change starts in our communities — and you can be an agent for that change, Mike. It might sound scary to take this first step, but this training will give you the knowledge and confidence to get your city leaders to support CalCare.

We need as many people fighting in their communities as possible — and this training is a powerful first step.

To get informed and learn about how to pass a CalCare city council resolution in support of A.B. 1400, RSVP now for CNA’s training this Thursday, March 11, at 5:00 PM.
