The next Future of Single Payer Now (SPN) meeting is this Saturday Mar 13, from 2 to 4. This meeting will address several crucial decisions about SPN in the wake of Don Bechler’s death. You’ll find instructions for joining the meeting at the bottom of this email.

Proposed agenda for the meeting:

  1. Welcome/guidelines for a productive meeting- 5 minutes

  2. Presentation of three options for single payer now- 10 min

  3. Voting on three options- 10 min

  4. Selecting steering committee to serve for next 3 months: a) nominations- 15 min b) voting- 5 min

  5. presentation of state legislation AB 1400- 10 min

  6. breakout rooms with working groups – 30 min

  7. report backs- 10 min

  8. Discussion & next steps- 25 min

  9. Announcements

The principal purpose of this meeting is to decide the future of SPN.

Here are the options:

  1. Keep SPN as a unique organization- This could require all or some of the following: select new steering committee, raise funds to hire a part-time organizer/admin, manage the supporter database, handle general administration, finances, donation management, plan events, organize trainings and tabling, serve on and attend various coalition events and statewide leadership meetings, participate in strategy for new statewide campaigns, represent SPN on the Healthcare Now board and other state-wide groups, stay involved and active in national SP efforts, manage website/social media and train and coordinate volunteers with various tasks and activities.  This option does not foreclose allying where appropriate with other single payer, union and progressive groups, but SPN would maintain its own separate identity, funding and membership.

  1. Become an affiliate of another CA statewide single issue/single payer group.  We might maintain our own database, and local chapter (can stay SPN, or say, SF chapter of Healthcare for All-CA). We might or might not need an admin or organizer.  We would be under the charter and rules of our adopted mother group and would have to fall in line with their activities, but would still presumably retain autonomy in our local activities,

  1. Dissolve SPN fully- everything is closed down. We notify supporters in the SPN database that we are shutting down and give them the option to join other statewide organizations working for single payer. Donate any remaining funds to single payer groups.

Please consider these options carefully before Saturday’s meeting. If you would like to question, modify or add to these options, please reply to this email with your suggestions.

Nominations for the steering committee

If you would like to recommend someone for the steering committee, you can reply to this email with your nomination(s).

There will be a further opportunity to make nominations before the vote. After the nominations and before the vote, nominees will be asked one-by-one if they accept the nomination and (briefly) what is their vision for SPN.  The steering committee will serve for the next three months, meeting every two weeks for an hour or two.

We look forward to seeing (or at least hearing from) you tomorrow.

– Members of the Ad Hoc Committee for the Future of SPN.
