Our film this month is a feature documentary that will be coming to San Francisco later this year. It’s playing in other parts of the country at different times during 2021.  The story of Frances Causey’s family in North Carolina is a rare family expose’.  She uses this background to teach us about slavery and its long shadow in our lives.

This film will have to be streamed from Kanopy and I am taking steps to not have the same experience that we had last month.  If you get  a chance to see it on Kanopy it would be good to have people in the audience who have already seen it to help with the discussion.  Just in case we have trouble again, at least you can watch it on Kanopy.  We will screen it on Friday, May 21.

Thanks and hope to see you there.

This film, The Long Shadow, features Frances Causey, who reveals her family’s history as slave holders.  She takes us back into the historical background and ugly U.S. history that we don’t really look at with much depth.  Ms Causey exposes her own family’s history and how we’re all still haunted by the ramifications of slavery.

The film, which will be featured on PBS in San Francisco in August, brings us face-to-face with how the Civil War continues today in a different form and that “the South” has won on many levels.  It’s a tricky political stance that we unconsciously accept allowing racism to continue as a normal state of affairs. (about 90 mins)

The Zoom link is below in blue – here are a couple noteworthy considerations:
  • Arrive in the Zoom meeting anytime after 6:00pm and we will try to start the film close to on-time (6:30pm)
  • We have an Amazon Prime option for watching the film together (to improve on our Kanopy failure last month).
  • See the attached official flyer for this film.
