Gleason<\/a>\/flickr\/cc)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<div>\n<p>After years of empty promises and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2018\/03\/07\/corker-if-pentagon-can-turn-entire-countries-into-craters-why-cant-it-audit-itself\/\">demands<\/a>\u00a0from frustrated members of Congress, the Pentagon finally\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/home\/2017\/12\/12\/dod-launches-long-awaited-audit\/\">conducted<\/a>\u00a0its first-ever comprehensive audit\u2014and unsurprisingly failed it, Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2018\/11\/15\/the-pentagon-failed-its-audit-but-officials-arent-surprised\/\">revealed<\/a>\u00a0Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pullquote\">&#8220;The unchecked waste, fraud, and abuse at the Pentagon is an insult to the American people.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2014Rep. Barbara Lee<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We failed the audit, but we never expected to pass it,&#8221; Shanahan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-pentagon-audit\/pentagon-fails-its-first-ever-audit-official-says-idUSKCN1NK2MC\">told reporters<\/a>\u00a0at a press briefing. While expressing irritation with the poor money management, he added, &#8220;it was an audit on a $2.7 trillion dollar organization, so the fact that we did the audit is substantial.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Although a 1990 federal law requires all U.S. government agencies to conduct annual financial audits, the Pentagon put it off until launching this one last December. Critics of the United States&#8217; astronomical military spending said the findings were precisely why lawmakers and the public have demanded Defense Department audits for decades.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is exactly why we must AuditThePentagon,&#8221; tweeted Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.). &#8220;The unchecked waste, fraud, and abuse at the Pentagon is an insult to the American people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The simple truth is that the Pentagon is an atrocious steward of the hundreds of billions of dollars taxpayers give them every year,&#8221; Win Without War director Stephen Miles told\u00a0<em>Common Dreams<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"pullquote\">&#8220;Throwing endless money at the Pentagon is what has created these problems, and the solution rests in finally tightening the world&#8217;s largest bureacuracy&#8217;s fiscal belt.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2014Stephen Miles, Win Without War<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whether it is massively overpaying for spare parts, mismanaging large weapons programs, or failing at the basics business of doing business, this audit confirms that the Pentagon is in dire need of reform,&#8221; he added. &#8220;Throwing endless money at the Pentagon is what has created these problems, and the solution rests in finally tightening the world&#8217;s largest bureaucracy&#8217;s fiscal belt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Even while members of Congress have called for audits, they&#8217;ve passed bipartisan bills doling out billions of taxpayer dollars to the department. The John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2019,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/08\/02\/40-senate-democrats-join-gop-send-717-billion-military-spending-bill-trumps-desk\">passed<\/a>\u00a0by lawmakers earlier this year allocated $717 billion to military spending,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/07\/26\/139-house-democrats-join-gop-approve-717-billion-military-spending\">the bulk of which<\/a>\u00a0goes to the Pentagon.<\/p>\n<p>Millions of dollars have gone into the audit process, and millions more will be spent to fix the issues it identified, according to Defense Department Comptroller David Norquist. He\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/defense\/368326-pentagon-audit-to-cost-367m-in-2018\">told lawmakers<\/a>\u00a0earlier this year that it cost $367 million to conduct the review, and it will take another $551 million to resolve the problems the some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dod.defense.gov\/News\/News-Releases\/News-Release-View\/Article\/1692138\/dod-completes-first-full-financial-statement-audit-findings-will-directly-benef\/\">1,200 auditors<\/a>\u00a0found.<\/p>\n<p>The audit findings come as a new report from the Costs of War Project at Brown University&#8217;s Watson Institute estimated that the since 2001, the so-called War on Terror has cost the United States a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2018\/11\/15\/new-study-details-staggering-6-trillion-and-counting-price-tag-endless-us-war\">&#8220;staggering&#8221; $5.9 trillion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"field-wrapper-copyright-cond\" class=\"field-wrapper content-container clearfix\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-copyright field--type-text field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\"><em>This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>November 16, 2018\u00a0by Common Dreams Decrying &#8220;unchecked waste, fraud, and abuse,&#8221; Rep.
