(Photo: Zuzana \u010caputov\u00e1 campaign)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voters in Slovakia elected activist Zuzana \u010caputov\u00e1 their first female president over the weekend, delivering a rebuke to right-wing nationalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Politico<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/political-outsider-wins-slovakias-presidential-election-zuzana-caputova-maros-sefcovic\/\">framed<\/a>&nbsp;\u010caputov\u00e1&#8217;s win as &#8220;cause for celebration for pro-EU and democratic forces throughout Central and Eastern Europe, as well as in Brussels.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 45-year-old lawyer and political novice secured 58 percent of the vote in Saturday&#8217;s runoff election, easily beating European Commission Vice President Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d, who nabbed just 42 percent of the vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d was backed by the ruling Smer-SD party. \u010caputov\u00e1 is part of the newly-formed Progressive Slovakia, and her&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zuzanacaputova.sk\/program\/\">platform<\/a>&nbsp;calls for justice for all, dignity for the elderly, and environmental protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u010caputov\u00e1&#8217;s lengthy and successful&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmanprize.org\/recipient\/zuzana-caputova\/\">campaign against a toxic waste dump<\/a>&nbsp;in her home town of Pezinok earned her the moniker the &#8220;Erin Brokovich of Slovakia&#8221; as well as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2016\/04\/18\/these-six-environmental-heroes-are-changing-world-find-out-how\">the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize in 2016<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applauding her electoral victory, the prize committee&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/goldmanprize\/status\/1112217983647023104\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;on Twitter, &#8220;We cannot imagine a stronger advocate for the Slovak people and environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her activism has continued since the Goldman award. More recently, she&#8217;s taken to the streets as part of the wave of protests against&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/blog\/2019\/02\/slovakia-jan-kuciak-murder-journalist-safety-anniversary.php\">the 2018 murders<\/a>&nbsp;of investigative journalist J\u00e1n Kuciak and his fianc\u00e9e Martina Ku\u0161n\u00edrov\u00e1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kuciak, as&nbsp;<em>Agence France-Presse<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20190331-anti-graft-activist-caputova-elected-slovakia-first-female-president\">reported<\/a>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>had been preparing to publish a story on alleged ties between Slovak politicians and the Italian mafia.<\/p><p>The killings forced then prime minister Robert Fico to resign but he remains leader of the populist-left Smer-SD and is a close ally of the current premier.<\/p><p>Five people have been charged, including a millionaire businessman with alleged Smer-SD ties who is suspected of ordering the murders.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The anti-corruption campaigner also made a stance in her victory speech not only in the words she delivered but her language choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/zcaputova\/photos\/a.861261877415131\/1081864415354875\/?type=3&amp;theater\">said<\/a>&nbsp;&#8220;decency in politics&#8221; can be &#8220;our strength,&#8221; and she called for people to seek &#8220;what unites us.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Reuters<\/em>&nbsp;also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-slovakia-election-president\/liberal-lawyer-caputova-on-course-to-become-slovakias-first-female-president-idUSKCN1RB003\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;that<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u010caputov\u00e1 started her acceptance speech by thanking voters in Slovak, as well as in the Hungarian, Czech, Roma, and Ruthenian languages, turning to all main minority groups.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This was an absolute first in Slovak politics,&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/opinion-slovakia-takes-a-stand-against-orban-style-populism\/a-48135650\">wrote<\/a>&nbsp;<em>DW<\/em>&#8216;s Keno Verseck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;With her election to the presidency, \u010caputov\u00e1 has become the most prominent representative of progressive politics in the region,&#8221; he added, and argued that her win &#8220;sends a clear signal that the vast majority of Slovaks want fundamental change.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the president wields limited power in the country\u2014he or she is able to &#8220;pick the prime minister, appoint Constitutional Court judges, and veto laws,&#8221; as&nbsp;<em>CBS<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/zuzana-caputova-elected-slovakias-first-female-president\/?ftag=CNM-00-10aab7e&amp;linkId=65507926\">noted<\/a>\u2014Verseck suggested that &#8220;\u010caputov\u00e1&#8217;s voice will carry a great deal of weight in Slovakia.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If this new president succeeds in implementing even some of her political and social plans,&#8221; he said, &#8220;we should not underestimate the signal that would send to the region as a whole.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>April 01, 2019 by Common Dreams Win by anti-corruption campaigner and lawyer seen as win for pro-European Union forces by Andrea Germanos, staff writer Zuzana \u010caputov\u00e1 just won Slovakia&#8217;s presidential election.
