And keeping your political party up-to-date is required in many states to take part&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/research\/elections-and-campaigns\/primary-types.aspx\">in a party&#8217;s primary elections<\/a>&nbsp;or caucuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve&nbsp;<strong>moved permanently<\/strong>&nbsp;to another state, you must&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.gov\/register-to-vote#item-212645\">register to vote<\/a>&nbsp;in the new state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if none of your information has changed, you should check your registration before every election you want to vote in. This is vital if you haven\u2019t voted recently. Your state may have dropped your registration from its rolls or changed your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.gov\/election-day#item-37327\">polling place<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Check and Change Your Voter Registration Information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Check it online.<\/strong>&nbsp;Go to the U.S. Election Assistance Commission\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eac.gov\/voters\/register-and-vote-in-your-state\/#tabs-2\">Register and Vote in Your State<\/a>&nbsp;page. Or visit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nass.org\/can-i-vote\">Can I Vote<\/a>. Either place will bring you to your state\u2019s voter registration page. There, you can find instructions on how to check and change your name and address. If your state keeps track of political party preference, you will find out how to check and change that too.<\/li><li><strong>Make changes online.&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eac.gov\/voters\/register-and-vote-in-your-state\/#tabs-2\">If your state has online voter registration<\/a>, use that to make changes.<\/li><li><strong>Make changes by mail.&nbsp;<\/strong>You can download, fill in, and mail the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eac.gov\/voters\/national-mail-voter-registration-form\/\">National Mail Voter Registration Form<\/a>. All states except New Hampshire and Wyoming accept it.<ul><li>If you need the form mailed to you,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.gov\/election-office\">contact your state or local election office<\/a>.<\/li><li>Many states also have their own form, which you can access from their voter registration web page.<\/li><li>Overseas and military voters, don&#8217;t use the mail-in form. Most purge, or delete, the names of inactive voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may have to cast a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/research\/elections-and-campaigns\/provisional-ballots.aspx\">provisional ballot<\/a>&nbsp;if you go to vote and find that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Your registration has been purged<\/li><li>Your polling place has changed<\/li><li>The name or address on your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usa.gov\/voter-id\">voter ID<\/a>&nbsp;isn&#8217;t an exact match for the information in your voter registration<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many states require you to present additional proof of identity within a couple of days of the election if you cast a provisional ballot. Otherwise, your provisional ballot won&#8217;t count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Information About Political Party Preference<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Party preference doesn\u2019t matter in general elections.
