Bernie Sanders&#8217;s 2020 presidential campaign late Monday enthusiastically welcomed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2019\/10\/07\/money-not-speech-and-corporations-are-not-people-sanders-unveils-plan-get-corporate\">lobbyist backlash<\/a>&nbsp;over the senator&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2019\/10\/07\/money-not-speech-and-corporations-are-not-people-sanders-unveils-plan-get-corporate\">new proposal<\/a>&nbsp;to dramatically curb the power of corporate money in politics and bar the Democratic National Committee from taking cash from big business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Good!&#8221; Sanders&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BernieSanders\/status\/1181325037971918849\">tweeted<\/a>&nbsp;in response to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/business-a-lobbying\/464720-lobbyists-pan-sanders-proposal-to-end-corporate-donations-for-party-conventions\">story<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<em>The Hill&nbsp;<\/em>that quoted several lobbyists opposed to the senator&#8217;s plan, which would&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jacobinmag.com\/2019\/10\/bernie-sanders-democratic-national-committee-corporate-donors\">ban corporate donations to the Democratic Party Convention<\/a>&nbsp;in Milwaukee if Sanders becomes the presidential nominee. As&nbsp;<em>Politico<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2019\/09\/29\/democratic-national-convention-milwaukee-008545\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;last month, Democratic operatives have already begun seeking lobbyist help with financing the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Bernie Sanders is building an unprecedented grassroots campaign to end corruption and as a nominee would host a grassroots conventions for delegates, party members, teachers, workers, nurses, farmers, and students.&#8221;<br>\u2014Josh Orton, Sanders national policy director<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stewart Verdery, CEO of public affairs firm Monument Advocacy, warned that &#8220;telling companies who would like to partner with the party to take their ball and go home will easily feed into an anti-capitalist motif.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;On the substance side, hosting a convention is a major endeavor that can strap the budgets of parties and cities\u2014the money has to come from somewhere and cutting off corporate donations may further depress interest in hosting a convention,&#8221; said Verdery. &#8220;On the image side, the Democrats always have to balance their populist rhetoric with quieter outreach to the business community.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Hill&nbsp;<\/em>also granted anonymity to a Democratic lobbyist who bashed Sanders&#8217;s proposal as a &#8220;desperate&#8221; attempt to outdo Sen. Elizabeth Warren&#8217;s (D-Mass.)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2019\/09\/16\/warren-rolls-out-plan-she-calls-most-sweeping-set-anti-corruption-reforms-watergate\">anti-corruption plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is simply a game of one-upmanship from a desperate campaign that doesn\u2019t have the ability to draft a 27-page thesis like Warren,&#8221; said the lobbyist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sanders campaign\u2014which proudly touts a list of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/berniesanders.com\/anti-endorsements\/\">&#8220;anti-endorsements&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;on its website\u2014was unmoved by the lobbyists&#8217; criticism. In fact, as deputy campaign manager Ari Rabin-Havt&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AriRabinHavt\/status\/1181344286689959936\">put it<\/a>, lobbyist outrage over the proposal &#8220;is not a bug\u2014it&#8217;s a feature.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Warren Gunnels, Sanders&#8217;s senior adviser, tweeted: &#8220;We welcome their hatred.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement to&nbsp;<em>The Hill<\/em>, Sanders national policy director Josh Orton pointed to the senator&#8217;s grassroots fundraising model\u2014which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2019\/10\/01\/fueled-teachers-and-average-donation-18-sanders-raised-record-253-million-third\">brought the campaign $25.3 million<\/a>&nbsp;from an average donation of just $18 in the third quarter of 2019\u2014and said &#8220;corporate lobbyists will never buy influence with Bernie, period.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Bernie Sanders is building an unprecedented grassroots campaign to end corruption,&#8221; said Orton, &#8220;and as a nominee would host a grassroots conventions for delegates, party members, teachers, workers, nurses, farmers, and students.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Our work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License.
