Goodlett Pl<br>SF<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brandon\nLee has been safely airlifted from the Philippines to his hometown,\nSan Francisco.&nbsp;&nbsp;To celebrate his return everyone is invited\nto City Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brandon\nand his mom Louise Lee, who has been by his bedside in the\nPhilippines for 10 weeks, left Manila on Thursday night and travelled\non a small air ambulance plane for 24 hours, making stops in Japan,\nRussia, and Alaska before they landed safely at SFO.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brandon\nleft San Francisco to be an earth protector with the indigenous\nIfugao peasants in the Cordillera Region in the Philippines. On\nAugust 6, Brandon was shot at his home in Lagawe, Ifugao, he\nsustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was gunned down for his\nenvironmental work to protect the land from large scale projects that\nwould destroy the eco-system and livelihoods of the indigenous\npeople.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brandon\nis a staunch advocate for human rights and has been a volunteer\nparalegal with Cordillera Human Rights Alliance. There are\nmany creative solutions to address this shortage but compromising the\nsafety of our students is not the answer. <br><br>That is exactly\nwhat SFUSD is proposing. Their most recent proposal splits the work\ninto three types of driving that can be bid on separately. One type\nof work is a new category of 10 non-buses with uncertified drivers,\nwhile leaving itself an open door to expand this work without limit.\n<br><br>School bus drivers are held to the highest standards of any\ncommercial license in the state of California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\nundergo hours of training, background checks, medical exams and drug\nscreening, and California Highway Patrol certification before we\nstart. We must retest every five years to continue driving. CHP and\nthe DMV can pull our certificates for any reason seen to compromise\nthe safety of children. <br><br>School buses are designed to protect\nthe children inside. Steel reinforced sides, rollover protections,\nanchored seats and the red-light system all prioritize safety.\n<br><br>Using uncertified drivers in vans compromises the safety of\nthe students we transport.
