{"id":14005,"date":"2020-03-05T11:33:53","date_gmt":"2020-03-05T19:33:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/occupysf.net\/?p=14005"},"modified":"2020-03-05T11:33:55","modified_gmt":"2020-03-05T19:33:55","slug":"anti-coke-lawsuit-plastic-is-set-to-outweigh-fish-in-the-ocean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/occupysf.net\/index.php\/2020\/03\/05\/anti-coke-lawsuit-plastic-is-set-to-outweigh-fish-in-the-ocean\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-Coke Lawsuit: \u201cPlastic Is Set to Outweigh Fish in the Ocean\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;These companies should bear the responsibility for choking our ecosystem with plastic.&#8221;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/authors\/victor\">VICTOR TANGERMANN<\/a> MARCH 2ND 2020 (Futurism.com)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Environmental group Earth Island Institute filed a lawsuit in California last week against Coke, Pepsi, Nestl\u00e9, and a number of other plastic polluters for knowingly misleading the public about how much of their produced plastic is being recycled (and landing in the ocean instead),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/qjde3p\/coke-and-pepsi-are-getting-sued-for-lying-about-recycling\"><em>VICE<\/em>&nbsp;reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese companies should bear the responsibility for choking our ecosystem with plastic,\u201d said David Phillips, executive director of Earth Island Institute, in a statement sent to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/feb\/27\/california-plastic-pollution-lawsuit-coke-pepsi\"><em>&nbsp;The Guardian<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThey know very well that this stuff is not being recycled, even though they are telling people on the labels that it is recyclable and making people feel like it\u2019s being taken care of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt this rate, plastic is set to outweigh fish in the ocean by 2050,\u201d the complaint reads, as quoted by&nbsp;<em>VICE<\/em>. The complaint also alleges that the ten companies named in the suit are guilty of engaging in a \u201cdecades-long campaign to deflect blame for the plastic pollution crisis to consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is the first suit of its kind,\u201d Phillips said in a statement. \u201cThese companies are going to have to reveal how much they\u2019ve known about how little of this stuff is being recycled.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to 2017 numbers, the US only recycled roughly<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/08\/20\/750864036\/u-s-recycling-industry-is-struggling-to-figure-out-a-future-without-china\">&nbsp;nine percent<\/a>&nbsp;of all produced plastic with the rest ending up in incinerators (about 12 percent), or the landfill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that was before China, formerly America\u2019s largest importer of recycling materials,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/e360.yale.edu\/features\/piling-up-how-chinas-ban-on-importing-waste-has-stalled-global-recycling\">banned<\/a>&nbsp;most types of plastic imports in 2018.
