New research shows that one-third of all freshwater fish now&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/global-shark-ray-populations-overfishing-extinction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">face extinction<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wwfint.awsassets.panda.org\/downloads\/world_s_forgotten_fishes__report_final__1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a report<\/a>&nbsp;published Tuesday by 16 global conservation groups, 18,075 species of freshwater fish inhabit our oceans, accounting for over half of the world\u2019s total fish species and a quarter of all vertebrates on Earth. This&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/more-than-150-countries-made-a-plan-to-save-the-worlds-species-and-ecosystems-a-decade-ago-a-new-report-says-they-mostly-failed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biodiversity<\/a>&nbsp;is critical to maintaining not only the health of the planet, but the economic prosperity of communities worldwide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 200 million people across Asia, Africa and South America rely on freshwater fishers for their main source of protein, researchers said in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/wwf_news\/press_releases\/?1529966\/Worlds-forgotten-fishes-vital-for-hundreds-of-millions-of-people-but-one-third-face-extinction-warns-new-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cThe World\u2019s Forgotten Fishes\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;report. About one-third of those people also rely on them for their jobs and livelihoods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite their importance, freshwater fishes are \u201cundervalued and overlooked,\u201d researchers said \u2014 and now freshwater biodiversity is declining at twice the rate of that in oceans and forests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eighty freshwater species have already been declared extinct \u2014 16 of them in 2020 alone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cbsnews1.cbsistatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2021\/02\/23\/835dec1f-47f4-4b13-b2b8-069572cf6c0c\/thumbnail\/620x413\/36846e9f5ac8b67828e9682644de9df3\/gettyimages-1169402736.jpg#\" alt=\"GREECE-ENVIRONMENT \"\/><figcaption>Thousands of dead freshwater fish are seen around Lake Koroneia, Greece, on September 19, 2019.&nbsp;SAKIS MITROLIDIS\/AFP VIA GETTY IMAGES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNowhere is the world\u2019s nature crisis more acute than in our rivers, lakes and wetlands, and the clearest indicator of the damage we are doing is the rapid decline in freshwater fish populations. They are the aquatic version of the canary in the coal mine, and we must heed the warning,\u201d said Stuart Orr of the World Wildlife Fund. \u201cDespite their importance to local communities and indigenous people across the globe, freshwater fish are invariably forgotten and not factored into development decisions about hydropower dams or water use or building on floodplains.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/feature\/climate-change\/?intcid=CNI-00-10aaa3a\">Climate Change<\/a>&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/freshwater-fish-catastrophic-extinction-endangered-species-climate-change\/?intcid=CNI-00-10aaa3a\">Freshwater fish in \u201ccatastrophic\u201d decline, one-third face extinction<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/russian-tanker-cuts-a-previously-impossible-path-through-the-warming-arctic\/?intcid=CNI-00-10aaa3a\">Russian tanker cuts previously impossible path through warming Arctic<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/u-s-can-expect-to-pay-20b-on-flood-damage-this-year-and-the-number-is-rising-climate-change\/?intcid=CNI-00-10aaa3a\">For homeowners, the cost of flooding is going through the roof<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/climate-change-texas-winter-storms-arctic-cold\/?intcid=CNI-00-10aaa3a\">What\u2019s behind the extreme cold in Texas?<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Migratory species have dropped by more than three-quarters in the last 50 years, while populations of larger species, known as \u201cmegafish,\u201d have declined by a \u201ccatastrophic\u201d 94%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freshwater ecosystems face a devastating combination of threats \u2014 including habitat destruction, hydropower dams, over-abstraction of water for irrigation, various types of pollution, overfishing, the introduction of invasive species and ongoing&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/cbsnews.com\/climatechange\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">climate change<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizations including the World Wildlife Fund, Global Wildlife Conservation and The Nature Conservancy have now called for governments to implement an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/wwfint.awsassets.panda.org\/downloads\/bending_the_curve_of_global_freshwater_biodiversity_loss_an_emergency_recovery_plan.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emergency Recovery Plan<\/a>\u201d to save freshwater biodiversity. They recommend protecting and restoring rivers, water quality and crucial habitats \u2014 undoing the damages caused by overfishing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFreshwater fish matter to the health of people and the freshwater ecosystems that all people and all life on land depend on,\u201d Orr said. \u201cIt\u2019s time we remembered that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a9 2021 CBS Interactive Inc.
