Thankfully, he survived, but this police response is outrageous.

Berkeley Copwatch invites you, the Berkeley community, to analyze footage of this incident and try to understand what went wrong.

We will be joined by a panel of mental health workers and activists to explore the question: What would mental health care and crisis response look like without police involvement? We will examine how mental health emergency response currently happens and the rising opportunity for alternative crisis response in Berkeley. We will also look at other communities already doing this work. Break out groups will follow and community dialogue will be encouraged.

In Berkeley, we have an opportunity to create structural change: this summer the City Council approved an initiative for a Specialized Care Unit that would respond to mental health crises without police involvement. This truth has proven itself time and time again, especially now, amid the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of broad U.S. economic sanctions, countries such as Iran, Syria, Venezuela, North Korea, Sudan and Zimbabwe struggle without adequate food, electricity, medicine, medical supplies, masks or respirators. Those who suffer most under sanctions include pregnant women, children, and the chronically ill.

U.S. economic sanctions technically exempt humanitarian items — but banks, insurance companies, and other corporations are afraid that if they make loans, provide insurance for shipments or send goods the U.S. government will accuse them of violating the sanctions, levy hefty fines and place them on a banned business list.

Join RootsAction.org alongside President and Co-founder of Muslim Delegates & Allies and Director of PDA Middle East Alliances, Hanieh Jodat, and CODEPINK’s Leonardo Flores for a discussion and Q&A on the effects of U.S. led economic sanctions and how they are worsening the COVID-19 pandemic around the world.

Info: (1) Lifting Sanctions Amid COVID-19, with Hanieh Jodat and Leonardo Flores | Facebook

Friday, March 26

6. The opportunistic scapegoating of China during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with the intensity by which China is deemed the enemy and adversary of the United States, has driven a widespread Sinophobic sentiment nationally. The Asian American community suffers the brunt of the hatred fomented as a weapon of war. To date, there have been 3,800 self-reported hate crimes against Asian Americans.

The mainstream media’s failure to label the Atlanta shooting as a hate crime demonstrates the gross disregard and injustice that our communities are facing. Racism is a sick symptom of a system that profits from war and violence. And to put insult to injury, the cop handling the case was found to be promoting anti-China paraphernalia.

Hosts: ANSWER Coalition, Comfort Women Justice Coalition, Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Pivot to Peace

Info: San Francisco | Stop Anti-Asian Violence, Stop China-Bashing! | Facebook

11.
