A key theme: we didn\u2019t lose to the Taliban, but beat ourselves. It was \u201cself-defeat,\u201d somehow not-disgraced former National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster told NBC, while&nbsp;<em>Washington Post&nbsp;<\/em>columnist Eugene Robinson cautiously described the disaster of Afghanistan as \u201ca war we did not win.\u201d Chuck Todd on&nbsp;<em>Meet the Press&nbsp;<\/em>liked that. \u201cI agree,\u201d he said, smiling a little and noting, \u201cI don\u2019t know if you can say we&nbsp;<em>lost<\/em>, but we didn\u2019t win.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Meet the Press <\/strong>@MeetThePressWATCH: &#8220;This is what withdrawal from a war that we did not win looks like,&#8221; says @Eugene_Robinson on #MTP \n\n&#8220;It&#8217;s messy. The images they see on TV aren\u2019t their party\u2019s fault, it\u2019s those other jerks to blame, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Republicans are blissful over Joe Biden\u2019s approval rating nosedive and are thrilled to blame the whole debacle on our Sundowner-in-Chief. Multiple Republicans are aping Trump-era Democrats by demanding the president\u2019s resignation, with one, Missouri Senator Vicky Hartzler, going so far as to demand closure of the U.S.-Mexican border to \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/email.mg2.substack.com\/c\/eJwlkE2u4yAQhE8T78Yy_7BgMZu5htWGToIeBgvaE2VOPzhBiEZFQxVfAMJHbW9_1E7Ttaz0PtAXfPWMRNims2NbU_RaCavsFL2M7Nqkvt4b4g4pe2onTse55RSAUi1XP1skn57eRbQCnWTOuQhGcrYAs0HcpZZCW_iawhkTloC-lvz-vDtl_yQ6-k38vvE_Y75er_kHSoceEr3nUPchXjlHOWpOlEL_9ah_sZUdCw0V2tAyciWMVUrZ-Ul7npLnywhhubu-wcXMZqvRSMOEUgaDCRo1X-5OOTSb2wDMTS77g8_93DpB-Lm8p-b_1ULAxhjHUPNHHQzWUfezjIwrFtgyxi8e-jL-AFsfWLAN9nEF8kyLhWuhzOKU-PIY_OSiBWPWTsM21nGreIK0bek_D-qQsA\">protect American lives<\/a>\u201d from an alleged heightened terrorist threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Democrats, not completely without self-reflection in the first days of this crisis, are already back focused on counter-blame narratives. Blue-state audiences are being reminded Donald Trump negotiated the \u201cpremature\u201d May 1st pullout date, and that when critics blasted that deal as \u201cweak and dangerous,\u201d House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/email.mg2.substack.com\/c\/eJwtkMuOhCAQRb-m2Wl4iwsWs-nfMDyqbTIKBnCM8_WD7RDC41bBrTrOVJhTPvWWSkXXMtVzAx3hKAvUChntBfIUvJaCKaGQ19yT6xDK9MoAqwmLrnkHtO12Cc7UkOKVTzCn6K0Ns5w4OUrplOeKE0JfZHDEKMwUF_Y2NbsPEB3oFJfz8y9a9LvWrTzY14M-2zyOo3dd2UzsU56b8BM8pCvGnlyOoyAdabd3agV3Gf6rid0CxkMul5Rya6igoCmmBCs6Xo1Q1pNeSRj4QJgQA7jBSZAUv0YxwmBHa8zw4HidaV92W6px371LK8r6N8VqSBstbNLyUZvv1PZ1j6GeE0RjF_A3oHpT_iCbZoiQG30_maqJZJhKJgY8CnYTaQQ5lowQpVCz9am9irqaYG34A_H8kFg\">advised<\/a>&nbsp;his caucus not to speak against it. McCarthy today is leading the charge in criticizing Biden\u2019s withdrawal, which is \u201cso freaking hypocritical,\u201d according to Senate-to-MSNBC pipeline passenger Claire McCaskill. Moreover, they say, House Democrat Jason Crow offered an amendment for his own \u201cconditions-based\u201d withdrawal plan, and that was shot down by the likes of Matt Gaetz, who last year&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/email.mg2.substack.com\/c\/eJwtUctuxCAM_JrllgjIAzhw6KW_ERHwblAJRMFRm359nU0Rsi3jsceDdwivsp92KxXZZSY8N7AZvmsCRNjZUWGfYrDj0OlBs2D7IK4g1um5A6wuJov7AWw75hS9w1jyVS94L9lixSjBqI5LB6YfgjSqf446OG24gNnze6g7QoTswZaczndfluyCuNVH9_GQn3RrIq6tLyvFF73G5dBsJUWMvlJOcinIcU1mh38yuTbbUvLZEG5LLmYk3PO1uBwrutzAT8SG2K9bu-CaWLRXG66luXaUXStaPYLqleiGQYFXfoRR8qcZDKjZzM6pR8_Xl2zrMVNH_3UxZLv9LRmdoEPPrqR3ljhN5NcjRzwnyG5OEG7t8P6At5rTCzLstGyYHJJ-pN3YDYqbobvFInF7PnZCaM1obCiEyhZdnOf4BxTYm5o\">said<\/a>, \u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s ever a bad day to end the war in Afghanistan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s all noise, designed to distract from the fact that Afghanistan is as pure a bipartisan fiasco as we\u2019ve had in recent times. Both parties were directly and repeatedly complicit in prolonging the catastrophe. Republicans and Democrats were virtually unanimous in approving the initial&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/email.mg2.substack.com\/c\/eJwlkMuOhCAQRb-m2Y3hKbhgMZv5DQNY2mRsMFC2cb5-sCWEuikel3uCQ1hyOe2WK5JrGfHcwCY46gqIUMheoYxxsr0SRhkyWTmxS8Q6zgXg5eJqsexAtt2vMTiMOV3nGZWcPO0Q_Cw5404yOhvFWS-EZMJQAcJTA7ep26cIKYDNaT0_75LVPhG3-hDfD_7T5nEc3ZLfWFz47fbaOiGnpUC95DsjXJVR_cUpZU0-RfOPllPOqOHD9WcuOtaZHrTUTCilIejQQ8_pPKgBtB-8c_oh6WvhXd19xcsq5Bcp9i8ndKyNtu3y-um2wGOrrz1FPEdIzq8w3SzwBvqhMy6QoDTQ0-jQtvyU90JpOihxh2-wJO0FY8aQZjvlditZdNH7-A__CIep\">use-of-force<\/a>, both voted over and over to fund the war to insane levels, and both Democratic and Republican presidents spent years covering up evidence of massive contracting corruption, accounting failure (as in, failure to do&nbsp;<em>any<\/em>&nbsp;accounting), war crimes, and other problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Afghanistan was the ultimate symbol of the two-party consensus, the \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/email.mg2.substack.com\/c\/eJw1kcuu4yAMhp-m7BpxDWTB4mzOa0QG3BYNgQqIoszTD2k1yPKPjLHNh4eOz1JP-y6tk8ut_XyjzXi0hL1jJXvDusZgZyWMMiRYGdi1iW19VMQNYrK97kjeu0vRQ48lX_mMSk5eVgg180VSH4wOLkjhjZBgGFtAManDtynsIWL2aEtO56cuSfbV-7vdxM-N_w47jmPKZ48btsmXbUQ4ZXoIZf_dUWoKQ6FFGFIcbHCHx_MFObYO-X5AnV59SyRaTjmjhi_XW7iY2GRm1FIzoZRGr_2MM6ePRS2o3eIA9E3S7cmntrtRyv-5ZiDV_i25AxtrHENJn-gAsQ7d9hz7uWIGlzB8GfUv6A-19YkZ6_iAsEK3bBaUz0JpuijxhTIgSjoLxowho20o41a2HaJz8R_VRZBl\">good war<\/a>\u201d as Barack Obama deemed it, and defense spending in general remained so sacrosanct across the last twenty years that the monster, $160 billion&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/email.mg2.substack.com\/c\/eJwtkEtuxCAMhk8z2SXiESBZsOim14gMuBlUAlFwNJ2evmSmCNkGjP3780C4luNp91Kpu8xCzx1txkdNSIRHd1Y8lhisVnJSUxfsGPgVxLp8HYgbxGTpOLHbT5eiB4olX_mcjaK7Wz4CAjOIfJLjBBy5l6iCcFpro0C-m8IZImaPtuT0fNXtkr0T7fUmP27is-3H4zH4nAdftnYSjE_NMXEZ08xeUqToawsr5jZWDzmXs9WsfUBIvTvDitR72GsP66UcM7XsmAP-DHfaUhetYIKzSczXhEIOfJg0mtFwqZRBb7xGLdjXrGY0bnYA5jaybRVDPV0l8N-Xuu6wvyUT8LbaM5T0um14lua3M0d6Lk2iSxje5OiN_8VyWTHj0fSHBchyLZnQUhk2q39UDe3ItOR8mrrWNpT2K1uC6Fz8A2JXmVM\">defense spending hikes<\/a>&nbsp;of 2017-2018 were virtually the only policy initiative of Donald Trump\u2019s that went unopposed by a Democratic leadership. \u201cWe fully support President Trump\u2019s Defense Department\u2019s request,\u201d was&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/email.mg2.substack.com\/c\/eJxNkcGO3CAMhp8mXCJFQEJIDhxWnd3zHir1GEFwZlAJZMGoSp--ZEYr1bKwZf9g-WPVCPeYTnXEjOQ6FjwPUAH-ZA-IkEjJkBZn1Sj6SUzEqsGyK3F52RLArp1XmAqQoxjvVo0uhkvP6MDJQxktNj1IwaUdORWGCrpVY3yU2zBZ-xqqi3UQVlAx-PP5LvHqgXg0_VvDPy5_581Em_nHL2i34v3Z5nIcMWH7mSA7CwHbn6nsx7dwzu0NNggZajx0wr1K_msm-CqQsfsu3YhTnHJGJz5fC_K-Y900ghwk64WQsMp1hLrDNosZpJmN1rIZ6H7nXS4mo15_d2vcSVJ_Y0DNqtW2jv5ZrXSWGvcSHJ4LBG082Bc4fNF_olzuECDVX7GLRsXGnvKxF5LOon-RqmQHOvaMTROpY22st4JC7Yxx_wAFFpaV\">Chuck Schumer\u2019s formulation<\/a>&nbsp;in 2018, choosing then to reward the Pentagon for turning Mesopotamia into a&nbsp;<em>Mad Max<\/em>&nbsp;set and spending two trillion dollars on the by-then-inevitable fall of Kabul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worse, as the performance of the legacy media in the last few weeks shows, the national commentariat is also fully occupied by the military establishment. Staffed from top to bottom by spooks and hawks, the corporate press\u2019s focus from the pre-Iraq firing of Phil Donahue through the past few weeks of&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/email.mg2.substack.com\/c\/eJwlkUuShCAMhk_T7LQE5OGCxWzmGlaQqNQoWIpjO6cfaCkgCY8_5GOAhFPcb7PFI5Ey9ene0AS8jgVTwp2cB-69d0YKroUmzrSOFscf_bgjruAXk_YTyXbaxQ-QfAzlPG1aRmYju1FTDQAjt61C5ZSQI2qpxWgdg_ZJCqfzGAY0MSz3R5csZk5pO17868W-c7-uq_6N73qIa45Yw2g2Og_alZhJ1glRXBinGYI_EoRqhuvnqMb4rkpFlfUOQ2UXWJF4UzQazbpSDuM1rbVE1SrKhVA4qEGiZM3YiQ6V7SyAerXNOrH6OG0WH37KU8hu_mJIQHPL2xCXz2pm0We7nsGnu8cAdkH3YEoP6w-4fsKAe_4D10MyVPKGSS5U0wn-cMkc20ZySrUmOa2L-VYwCby1_h_XiJFl\">guest star appearances<\/a>&nbsp;on CNN, Fox, and MSNBC by the likes of Leon Panetta, John Bolton, Karl Rove, David Petraeus and Marc Thiessen \u2014 all people with direct involvement in the Afghan mess \u2014 has been the same. It keeps the public distracted with inane tactical issues or fleeting partisan controversies, leaving the larger problem of a continually expanding Fortress America unexamined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We need new institutions free of Pentagon influence, probably starting with a new political party. It doesn\u2019t even matter so much what such a party would stand for, ideologically, so long as it adheres to one basic principle: don\u2019t accept contractor money. It seems like the only possible solution to the disease that gave us Afghanistan. Our two parties, just like our academic research institutions, news networks, and even Hollywood\u2019s movie studios, have become&nbsp;<em>de facto&nbsp;<\/em>Pentagon subsidiaries. When you put the U.S. against another country where there\u2019s a military that wears uniforms and they meet on the field of battle, the U.S. usually wins those kinds of wars\u2014like the Gulf War in \u201891. But in complex civil wars, the United States has really struggled.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d agree, with a twist: under the influence of captured parties and the military\u2019s ubiquitous and extravagantly funded public relations apparatus, America has itself redefined the \u201cnature of war.\u201d Armed conflict has gone from being an occasional unpleasant political necessity to the core product line of the American corporation. Wars are what we make, and like blue jeans or Louisville Sluggers, we build them to last, with Afghanistan the prime example.
