STOLEN BODIES ON STOLEN LAND! As Indigenous Peoples Day approaches, we are reminded of the media’s silence – no coverage of missing & murdered Indigenous women (MMIW), girls, and relatives. Local news outlets like KTVU have silenced anyone who points out that there is always coverage of missing white women & girls, but none for our communities. Those who speak this truth have been removed from the air, like Frank Sommerville. The Bay Area is supposedly a progressive stronghold, yet the media is not even willing to have a straight up conversation about violence against Indigenous women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ALL VIOLENCE IS STATE VIOLENCE! We recognize. By their silence, they contribute to that violence. Colonial ideals like gender and intimate partner violence keep the cycle of violence going against MMIW and MMIR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We demand coverage of MMIW and MMIR across California by our local news stations and by KTVU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In just under a month, thousands of Haitian families in Del Rio were expelled back to danger, put in ICE detention, or completely abandoned — including mothers with babies only a couple days old. Dr. Armen Henderson<\/strong> is an assistant professor at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, Director of Health Programs with Dream Defenders and Founder of the Dade County Street Response (disaster relief and community medic teams). He completed medical School at Meharry Medical College (’14) and general internal medicine residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital\/UM  (’17). Recently he has been active in responding to vulnerable communities since the start of COVID-19, particularly working with those that are unsheltered in Miami. Focus areas are climate change, street medicine, disaster preparedness, gun violence, social determinants of health and community organizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Peter Sporn <\/strong>is a pulmonary and critical care medicine physician and professor of medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.  He is a long-time activist who has participated in a variety of movements, including struggles against South African Apartheid, against racial injustice in the United States, in opposition to multiple U.S. wars of aggression, and in support of freedom for Palestine. He has done medical relief work in Palestine, and is a founding member of the Jewish Voice for Peace Health Advisory Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahmad Abuznaid <\/strong>is the Executive Director of the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights. After completing law school Ahmad went on to co-found the Florida-based Dream Defenders in response to the killing of Trayvon Martin. While in leadership at Dream Defenders, Ahmad championed racial justice issues across the US and successfully led several delegations of organizers from the US to Palestine. After leaving the Dream Defenders in 2016, Ahmad served as the Executive Director of the National Network for Arab American Communities until 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concord city council will make a decision on the police department’s request for approval to operate drones. Private business interests have offered to pay for the initial purchase of the devices, meaning that business leaders are using their money and influence to shape policing policy in the city. If business leaders hadn’t offered to buy the machines, the city wouldn’t be considering a police drone program.

Additionally, the police department is refusing public demand for any oversight. Members of the public are demanding a independent oversight board, but the police union and police chief are firmly rejecting any oversight proposal.
