It\u2019s official!<\/strong> Thursday night, Kshama Sawant<\/strong> was declared victorious in defending her Seattle City Council seat against another recall attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have defeated the combined efforts of big business, the right wing, corporate media, the courts, and the political establishment<\/strong> who sought to remove our socialist council office by any means necessary,\u201d Sawant said to a crowd of supporters. \u201cWe won because we did not back down.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voter turnout was 53% \u2014 10% higher than in November\u2019s general election in the city. Sawant has now been elected by Seattle voters three times.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She helped Seattle become the first major city to adopt a $15 minimum wage<\/strong> and passed the \u201cAmazon Tax\u201d<\/strong> to build affordable housing. Sawant also developed a local Green New Deal<\/strong> and won a campaign for renters\u2019 rights.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, it\u2019s up to San Francisco voters to defeat a rightwing recall attempt against SF District Attorney Chesa Boudin.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
