We just want to see people get vaccinated.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/article_author\/public\/2021-06\/brett-wilkins-200x200.jpg?h=55541bb6&amp;itok=st0jtEJy\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/brett-wilkins\">BRETT WILKINS<\/a>  December 30, 2021  (CommonDreams.org)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A small team of<\/strong>&nbsp;Texas researchers is being hailed for developing an unpatented Covid-19 vaccine to share with the world without personal profit, with some advocates asking, if they can do it, why can&#8217;t Big Pharma?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If we had even a fraction of the support that Moderna had, who knows, maybe the world would be vaccinated by now.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/healthpolicy-watch.news\/vaccine-for-world-gets-emergency-use-authorization-in-india-texas-childrens-hospital-grants-non-exclusive-license-to-biological-e\/\">Dubbed<\/a>&nbsp;&#8220;the World&#8217;s Covid vaccine,&#8221; the inoculation\u2014formally called Cobervax\u2014is an open-source alternative to Big Pharma&#8217;s patent-protected vaccines. Instead of being produced for profit, this shot could ultimately be manufactured around the world and made cheaply available to all without governmental or private legal retribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Common Dreams<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/12\/28\/unpatented-shot-dubbed-worlds-covid-19-vaccine-wins-emergency-approval-india\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;this week that Cobervax\u2014developed jointly by Texas Children&#8217;s Hospital, Houston&#8217;s Baylor College, and the Indian pharmaceutical company Biological E. Limited\u2014was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/govt-panel-recommends-eua-for-covid-19-vaccines-covovax-corbevax-and-anti-covid-pill-molnupiravir-7694102\/\">authorized<\/a>&nbsp;for emergency use in India amid a surge in infections driven by the highly contagious Omicron variant. Texas Children&#8217;s Hospital&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texaschildrens.org\/texas-children%E2%80%99s-hospital-and-baylor-college-medicine-covid-19-vaccine-technology-secures-emergency\">says<\/a>&nbsp;the new vaccine is at least 90% effective against the&nbsp;SARS-CoV-2 virus, and 80% or more effective against its Delta variant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not trying to make money,&#8221; Peter Hotez, who led the Texas Children&#8217;s Hospital team,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2021\/12\/30\/corbevax-texas-childrens-covid-vaccine\/\">told<\/a>&nbsp;<em>The Washington Post<\/em>. &#8220;We just want to see people get vaccinated.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe allowfullscreen=\"true\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-0&amp;features=eyJ0ZndfZXhwZXJpbWVudHNfY29va2llX2V4cGlyYXRpb24iOnsiYnVja2V0IjoxMjA5NjAwLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X2hvcml6b25fdHdlZXRfZW1iZWRfOTU1NSI6eyJidWNrZXQiOiJodGUiLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X3NwYWNlX2NhcmQiOnsiYnVja2V0Ijoib2ZmIiwidmVyc2lvbiI6bnVsbH19&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1476594657249345543&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2F2021%2F12%2F30%2Ftexas-team-applauded-giving-what-big-pharma-refuses-patent-free-vaccine-world&amp;sessionId=f84f3689f4138050d1fc89ede59c7dd1d2230e15&amp;siteScreenName=commondreams&amp;siteUserId=14296273&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=9fd78d5%3A1638479056965&amp;width=550px\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the&nbsp;<em>Post<\/em>, &#8220;Biological E. has ambitious plans to produce more than one billion doses of the vaccine in 2022.&#8221; And while Hotez and Maria Elena Bottazzi at Baylor won&#8217;t personally profit from vaccine they were instrumental in developing, the&nbsp;<em>Post<\/em>&nbsp;reports Baylor will take a fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hotez said the Hyderabad-based pharma firm has about 150 million Cobervax doses ready to distribute, with 300 million more doses pre-ordered by the Indian government. The company hopes to ramp up production to 100 million monthly doses in order to better serve a nation in which only around 40% of the population are fully vaccinated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peter Maybarduk, director of the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2021\/12\/30\/corbevax-texas-childrens-covid-vaccine\/\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Thursday that &#8220;Texas Children&#8217;s Hospital&#8217;s commitment to sharing technology is a challenge to the pharma giants and the false narrative that vaccine production and medical innovation thrive through secrecy and exclusivity.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If Texas Children\u2019s Hospital can do it,&#8221; he asked, &#8220;why can&#8217;t Pfizer and Moderna?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe allowfullscreen=\"true\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/embed\/Tweet.html?dnt=false&amp;embedId=twitter-widget-1&amp;features=eyJ0ZndfZXhwZXJpbWVudHNfY29va2llX2V4cGlyYXRpb24iOnsiYnVja2V0IjoxMjA5NjAwLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X2hvcml6b25fdHdlZXRfZW1iZWRfOTU1NSI6eyJidWNrZXQiOiJodGUiLCJ2ZXJzaW9uIjpudWxsfSwidGZ3X3NwYWNlX2NhcmQiOnsiYnVja2V0Ijoib2ZmIiwidmVyc2lvbiI6bnVsbH19&amp;frame=false&amp;hideCard=false&amp;hideThread=false&amp;id=1476593945949913090&amp;lang=en&amp;origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2F2021%2F12%2F30%2Ftexas-team-applauded-giving-what-big-pharma-refuses-patent-free-vaccine-world&amp;sessionId=f84f3689f4138050d1fc89ede59c7dd1d2230e15&amp;siteScreenName=commondreams&amp;siteUserId=14296273&amp;theme=light&amp;widgetsVersion=9fd78d5%3A1638479056965&amp;width=550px\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>Post<\/em>&nbsp;continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>Unlike the vaccines of big-name manufacturers such as Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, the Texas Children&#8217;s Hospital vaccine&#8230; is being shared patent-free&#8230; The ambition is to create a low-cost, open-source alternative to expensive and limited-supply mRNA vaccines for developing and under-vaccinated countries. And it won&#8217;t stop at India: Hotez and Bottazzi are talking to other manufacturers around the world and have consulted with the World Health Organization to see how they can share the vaccine globally.<\/p><p>If everything goes to plan, manufacturers all around the world could produce their own versions of the Texas Children&#8217;s Hospital vaccine, which uses older recombinant protein technology that many manufacturers already have experience with, rather than newer and potentially more complicated technology. Some advocates hope it could be a model for how vaccines should be developed and shared globally during a pandemic.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This vaccine can be made locally all over the world, and we&#8217;ve now technology-transferred our Texas Children&#8217;s vaccine to producers in India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, [and] Botswana,&#8221; Hotez&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeterHotez\/status\/1475839914910666767\">tweeted<\/a>&nbsp;Tuesday. &#8220;Our Texas Children&#8217;s Center does not plan to make money on this, it&#8217;s a gift to the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Big Pharma corporations&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthaffairs.org\/do\/10.1377\/forefront.20210512.191448\/full\/\">took billions of dollars<\/a>&nbsp;in public funding to help develop vaccines from which they then&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/11\/02\/making-killing-amid-pandemic-pfizer-boosts-vaccine-sales-forecast-36-billion\">reaped<\/a>&nbsp;enormous profits while often&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/views\/2021\/12\/28\/vaccine-monopolies-must-be-broken\">charging<\/a>&nbsp;exorbitant prices, Hotez and Battazzi created Cobervax with $7 million, mostly from private investors.
