Their <\/em>new organization<\/em><\/a> is working to organize people over the age of 60 \u201con issues of climate change, racial equity, and the protection of democracy.\u201d The organization\u2019s first major campaign, \u201cBanking On Our Future,\u201d is encouraging customers of the banks financing the climate crisis \u2014 including Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, and Wells Fargo \u2014 to close their accounts and move their money elsewhere. (If you aren\u2019t a customer of those banks, <\/em>you can pressure them<\/em><\/a> in other ways.) This week, the New York state pension fund\u00a0<\/em>divested from 21 fracking companies<\/em><\/a>, as part of the state\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>broader<\/em><\/a>fossil fuel<\/em><\/a>divestment<\/em><\/a>\u00a0push.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n In the past two weeks, the Biden administration <\/em>has dropped<\/em><\/a>two appeals<\/em><\/a> of legal victories for student debtors in bankruptcy court, after <\/em>The Daily Poster reported on the cases. But the administration still hasn\u2019t said it will stop fighting the dozens of other struggling student loan borrowers trying to have their debt discharged through bankruptcy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n So on Thursday, 17 advocacy organizations <\/em>sent a letter<\/em><\/a> to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, demanding the Education Department drop its cases against these borrowers. \u201cWe ask the Department to immediately cease its practice of opposing borrowers seeking student loan relief in the bankruptcy process,\u201d the letter said. \u201cWe also ask the Department to review all positions taken in such cases during your Administration, and work with borrowers to assure a just outcome\u2026 Through it all, the Department should be a leading voice for students, and should refrain from taking legal positions that raise the bar for distressed borrowers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n At a Friday press conference on student debt cancellation, <\/em>The Daily Poster asked Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) if he supported these organizations\u2019 demand. \u201cYes, absolutely,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cIt\u2019s outrageous that other people get to declare bankruptcy but students can\u2019t,\u201d referring to the carve-out for student debt in bankruptcy that makes it very challenging for people declaring bankruptcy to have their student loans discharged.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nGroups Call On Biden To Stop Fighting Beleaguered Debtors:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
