(AP Photo\/Tony Dejak)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A super PAC bankrolled by a fossil fuel magnate is launching last-minute ads to try to crush the congressional candidacy of a leading proponent of a Green New Deal as scientists&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-united-nations-paris-europe-berlin-802ae4475c9047fb6d82ac88b37a690e\">warn<\/a>&nbsp;that oil and gas emissions are making the planet unlivable. If successful, the gambit would deliver an intimidating message from the fossil fuel industry to other Democratic candidates pressing the government to address the climate crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One month after Samson Energy mogul Stacy Schusterman&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/forms\/C00710848\/1586706\/sa\/ALL\">poured $2 million<\/a>&nbsp;into DMFI PAC, the group&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/publicfiles.fcc.gov\/api\/manager\/download\/78d73a1b-3202-eed0-046f-668ae91e6a32\/741d9898-05cb-4435-a4a7-1df8075a8f95.pdf\">purchased<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/publicfiles.fcc.gov\/api\/manager\/download\/b53d6989-6af3-44f7-f8fa-a58608461557\/74898d6d-8472-47b4-8c49-088c3e76418c.pdf\">TV ads<\/a>&nbsp;starting Monday to boost Rep. Shontel Brown (D-Ohio) in her primary campaign rematch against former Ohio State Sen. Nina Turner in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/news\/2022\/01\/nina-turner-announces-run-for-congress-setting-up-democratic-primary-rematch-with-shontel-brown.html\">newly redrawn<\/a>&nbsp;Cleveland congressional district. The primary election date is May 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, DMFI PAC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?202108019465820414\">spent $1.9 million<\/a>&nbsp;attacking Turner and promoting Brown, helping the latter win the seat in a special election. The group also spent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/demmaj4israel\/status\/1229108956557168641\">$1.4 million<\/a>&nbsp;attacking Sanders during his 2020 campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turner, who co-chaired Sen. Bernie Sanders\u2019 (Ind.-Vt.) 2020 presidential campaign, has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ninaturner\/status\/1497598540113186824\">campaigning<\/a>&nbsp;for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ninaturner\/status\/1515397529843777538?s=20&amp;t=ljMdARRj8LxCiX-kjxITRw\">Green New Deal<\/a>&nbsp;and pressing the Biden administration to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ninaturner\/status\/1385271854760300544\">ban fracking<\/a>. Brown has declined to co-sponsor some of House Democrats\u2019&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-concurrent-resolution\/31\/cosponsors?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22climate%22%2C%22climate%22%5D%7D&amp;s=1&amp;r=1&amp;overview=closed#tabs\">most high-profile climate legislation<\/a>, including the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/794\/cosponsors\">Climate Emergency Act<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 even after United Nations scientists\u2019 recent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/scientists-stage-worldwide-climate-protests-after-ipcc-report-180979913\/\">dire warning about the crisis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Brown\u2019s campaign website&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/shontelbrown.com\/priorities\/\">says<\/a>&nbsp;she supports \u201cthe principles laid out in the Green New Deal,\u201d she has not&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-resolution\/332\/cosponsors?r=5&amp;s=1\">co-sponsored<\/a>&nbsp;the measure in Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schusterman&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.samsonco.com\/executive_team.aspx\">chairs<\/a>&nbsp;Oklahoma-based Samson Energy, whose&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.samsonco.com\/\">website<\/a>&nbsp;describes it as a company that \u201cwas formed to allow the Schusterman family to remain in the oil and gas exploration and production business following their sale of Samson Investment Company in 2011.\u201d The company has been one of the country\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.americanprogress.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/17113709\/MethanePollution-report.pdf\">largest<\/a>&nbsp;per-well emitters of greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schusterman\u2019s donations to DMFI PAC accounted for nearly 70 percent of the $2.9 million in funding that the organization raised in the first quarter this year, between January and March.
