On July 11, the New York Times published a poll, in coordination with Siena College, of 849 registered voters and found that 64 percent of Democrats want a nominee other than President Joe Biden for the 2024 presidential election. When narrowed down to Democrats under 30, that percentage rose to 94 percent.

In terms of reasons, Biden, at 79, is already the oldest president in history, and his job performance polled neck and neck at 33 percent and 32 percent, respectively. Older voters were more likely to choose age as a reason.

This isn’t the first time Democrats have suggested that a 2024 Biden run might be a mistake for the party’s chances to stay in the White House. His age has repeatedly been cited given that if he were reelected, he would be 86 at the end of his presidency. A June 2022 survey from Harvard’s Center for American Political Studies and the Harris Poll found that 64 percent of voters thought Biden was showing “he is too old to be president.” White House officials have rebuffed such criticisms by pointing to the president’s vigorous exercise routine and saying that he has “remained intellectually engaged.”

One in 10 Democrats said Biden was not progressive enough, according to the poll, conducted between July 5 and July 7, soon after the overturning of Roe v Wade. In response to a Washington Post article exploring the lack of progress made since the Supreme Court decision, the White House took a jab at pro-abortion “activists” who are pushing the administration to take serious and expedient measures to protect abortion rights. White House communications director Kate Bedingfield told WaPo, “The president has been showing his deep outrage as an American and executing his bold plan, which is the product of months of hard work ever since this decision was handed down. Joe Biden’s goal in responding to Dobbs is not to satisfy some activists who have been consistently out of step with the mainstream of the Democratic Party.” The comments sparked criticism from abortion-access advocates. On July 10, Biden told the press that critics should “keep protesting,” likely in a nod to the backlash.

“All this White House has for people who need abortions is empty promises and disrespect,” Renee Bracey Sherman, executive director of We Testify, tweeted in response to Bedingfield’s comments.
