(Photo:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JohnFetterman\/status\/1564002093429673984\/photo\/1\">John Fetterman<\/a>\/Twitter)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Showing up and competing in places like Mercer and Venango, and all of the other counties in between, is the secret to winning as a Democrat in Pennsylvania.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/article_author\/public\/2021-06\/brett-wilkins-200x200.jpg?h=55541bb6&amp;itok=st0jtEJy\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/brett-wilkins\">BRETT WILKINS<\/a> August 29, 2022 (CommonDreams.org)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In keeping with his<\/strong>&nbsp;campaign&#8217;s &#8220;Every County, Every Vote&#8221; strategy, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate John Fetterman took his progressive message deep into conservative counties this weekend, making his case to voters he knows he&#8217;ll need for a victorious finish in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Mercer County isn&#8217;t a place many Democrats go to, but that doesn&#8217;t change our approach.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fetterman, who is also Pennsylvania&#8217;s lieutenant governor, spoke to a crowd of nearly 500 people at the&nbsp;Hickory VFW Normandy banquet hall in Hermitage\u2014the seat of deeply red Mercer County\u2014on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Do you think Dr. Oz could get over 400 people out in Mercer County on a Sunday afternoon? Dr. Oz didn&#8217;t even know that Mercer County existed a year ago,&#8221; Fetterman told the crowd, referring to his Republican opponent, celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz, whom he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politicspa.com\/fm-poll-fetterman-shapiro-lead-by-double-digits\/111371\/\">leads<\/a>&nbsp;by double digits in most polling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll always fight for Mercer County,&#8221; Fetterman vowed. &#8220;Mercer County isn&#8217;t a place many Democrats go to, but that doesn&#8217;t change our approach. Trump carried neighboring Venango County by 41 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local resident Debra Kaluzne waited for more than an hour in 90-degree heat to be the first in line at Sunday&#8217;s rally. Wearing a shirt emblazoned with &#8220;1973&#8221;\u2014the year of the U.S. Supreme Court&#8217;s&nbsp;<em>Roe v. Wade&nbsp;<\/em>ruling that established federal abortion rights\u2014Kaluzne&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sharonherald.com\/news\/fetterman-draws-a-crowd\/article_a010b086-2716-11ed-a62f-1f42945792c9.html\">told<\/a>&nbsp;<em>The Sharon Herald<\/em>&nbsp;that for her, the election is &#8220;mostly&#8230; about pro-choice.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Referring to the reproductive freedom recently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/06\/24\/dark-day-our-nation-right-wing-supreme-court-ends-constitutional-right-abortion\">revoked<\/a>&nbsp;by the high court&#8217;s right-wing supermajority, Kaluzne said that &#8220;I fought for this 50 years ago. I think the generations behind us took a lot of things for granted.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another supporter, Hermitage resident Genevieve Monks,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wkbn.com\/news\/elections\/senate-candidate-john-fetterman-speaks-in-hermitage\/\">told<\/a>&nbsp;<em>WKBN<\/em>, &#8220;I&#8217;m 75 years old, I&#8217;ve never volunteered so much for an election as I am now.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democratic U.S. Senate candidate John Fetterman speaks to an audience in Hermitage, Pennsylvania on August 28, 2022.
