Levin Professor of History, Yale University About this program \u201cMarc Quinn: History Painting +,\u201d at the Yale Center for British Art from May 20 through October 16, 2022, presents six works by the British artist Marc Quinn, whose \u201cHistory Painting\u201d series reimagines iconic news photographs. One of these large-scale photorealist canvases, \u201cHistory Painting (Kiev [Kyiv], 22 January 2014), YGORBW\u201d is a depiction of Vasily Maximov\u2019s photograph of the burning \u201cbattlefield\u201d of Kyiv published in \u201cTime\u201d magazine in 2014. This lecture provides an overview of the history of Ukraine to help contextualize the current conflict. Martina Droth, Deputy Director and Chief Curator, will moderate the Q&amp;A. About Timothy Snyder Snyder\u202fis the Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna.\u202fHis books include \u201cNationalism, Marxism, and Modern Central Europe: A Biography of Kazimierz Kelles-Krauz\u201d (1998);\u202f\u201dThe Reconstruction of Nations: Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, 1569-1999\u2033 (2003);\u202f \u201cSketches from a Secret War: A Polish Artist\u2019s Mission to Liberate Soviet Ukraine\u201d (2005); \u201c\u202fThe Red Prince: The Secret Lives of a Habsburg Archduke\u201d \u202f(2008);\u201d\u202fBloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin\u202f\u201d (2010);\u202fThinking the Twentieth Century (with Tony Judt, 2012);\u202f \u201cBlack Earth: The Holocaust as History and Warning\u201d \u202f(2015);\u202f \u201cOn Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century\u201d \u202f(2017); \u201cThe Road to Unfreedom: Russia, Europe, America\u201d \u202f(2018); and \u201cOur Malady: Lessons on Liberty from a Hospital Diary\u201d (2020). Snyder\u2019s work has appeared in forty languages and has received numerous prizes. He has appeared in documentaries, on network television, and in major films. His books have inspired poster campaigns and exhibitions, films, sculpture, a punk rock song, a rap song, a play, and an opera.\u202fHis words are quoted in political demonstrations around the world.\u202fHe is currently finishing a philosophical book about freedom.
