(Photo: Silvio Avila\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thousands of the outgoing Brazilian president&#8217;s far-right supporters called on the military to intervene as Bolsonaro refuses to admit his defeat to leftist President-elect Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/article_author\/public\/2021-06\/jake-johnson-200x200.jpg?h=55541bb6&amp;itok=dRxLRucM\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/jake-johnson\">JAKE JOHNSON<\/a>  November 2, 2022  (CommonDreams.org)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A huge crowd of<\/strong>&nbsp;defeated Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro&#8217;s supporters rallied outside one of the national army&#8217;s headquarters on Wednesday to demand a military coup to nullify the right-wing incumbent&#8217;s loss and prevent President-elect Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva from taking power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>Associated Press<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jair-bolsonaro-brazil-0b0e3bdcb4a0a626428d335fa560aeda\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;that thousands attended the rally, where Bolsonaro loyalists chanted &#8220;Armed forces, save Brazil!&#8221; and carried signs demanding a &#8220;federal intervention&#8221; following the president&#8217;s narrow defeat in Sunday&#8217;s runoff election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The demonstration came a day after Bolsonaro, in his first public remarks since his defeat in Sunday&#8217;s contest,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/11\/01\/no-concession-brazils-bolsonaro-staff-say-transition-proceed\">refused<\/a>&nbsp;to directly concede defeat but pledged to &#8220;follow all the commandments of our constitution,&#8221; a signal that he would allow the presidential transition to move forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/visegrad24\/status\/1587857799429718021?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1587857799429718021%7Ctwgr%5E1c81edeae7225ee62c5a8af5fdea21e1594aaa8d%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2F2022%2F11%2F02%2Fbolsonaro-mob-rallies-outside-army-hq-demanding-military-coup<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent weeks, Bolsonaro has repeatedly and baselessly warned of election fraud and hinted that he would not willingly leave office, in some cases invoking support among Brazil&#8217;s military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The army is on our side,&#8221; Bolsonaro said during a July campaign event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But&nbsp;<em>AP<\/em>&nbsp;noted that while &#8220;the military has taken on an ample role under Bolsonaro,&#8221; it &#8220;has remained silent in the month since the first round of the election, a sign it is likely distancing itself from the ex-army captain.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bolsonaro reportedly met with the heads of the Brazilian Navy and Air Force on Tuesday as his supporters&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/11\/01\/bolsonaro-expected-accept-defeat-his-supporters-block-roads-demand-military-coup\">wreaked havoc<\/a>&nbsp;on the nation&#8217;s streets, setting tires on fire and blocking roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his brief public statement, Bolsonaro said his supporters&#8217; actions stemmed from &#8220;indignation and a feeling of injustice about how the electoral process played out.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thomas Traumann, a Brazilian journalist and political analyst,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/nov\/01\/jair-bolsonaro-brazil-election-silence-lula\">told<\/a>&nbsp;<em>The Guardian<\/em>&nbsp;on Tuesday that he believes Bolsonaro &#8220;is clearly afraid of prison&#8230; so what he&#8217;s trying to do is negotiate with the only card he has left, which is big street protests.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Guardian<\/em>&nbsp;noted that &#8220;after leaving power Bolsonaro, could find himself exposed to a multitude of possible investigations and charges relating to fake news, anti-democratic behavior, alleged corruption, and his handling of a Covid pandemic which killed nearly 700,000 Brazilians.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;On Tuesday night, Bolsonaro was reportedly locked in talks with at least six members of the supreme court as part of that supposed negotiation,&#8221; the newspaper reported. &#8220;One prominent political journalist, Guilherme Amado, said the president planned to &#8216;request that neither he nor his family be persecuted&#8217; once he stepped down.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Supporters of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro demand a military coup outside of an army building in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, on November 2, 2022.
