Finally some good news for San Francisco\u2019s struggling Market Street: The long-awaited IKEA will open in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than two years after buying the empty mall at 945 Market St. for $198 million, IKEA says construction on the store build-out is well under way \u2014 it started in August \u2014 and that the grand opening will occur in the fourth quarter of next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are dedicated to creating an exciting and welcoming meeting place on Market Street in San Francisco,\u201d the Swedish home goods and furniture retailer said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project is being developed by Ingka Centres, an affiliate of IKEA. The mall will be branded as Livat, a Swedish word that translates as \u201clively happening\u201d or \u201cbustling gathering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far the company has been guarded about other tenants at the 250,000-square-foot shopping center, which has been vacant since it was completed in 2016. The IKEA is slated to occupy 87,000 square feet, and 47,000 square feet of the building is zoned for office space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlongside an IKEA store, we plan to bring innovative concepts in food, entertainment, wellness and flexible office spaces that will make our new meeting place vibrant, fresh and appealing for the many visitors and the community,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
