Ro Khanna (D-Calif.)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/jan-6-insurrection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Friday. &#8220;And they do not belong on the ballot going forward. Elected officials who directly aided and abetted the deadly assault on our nation&#8217;s democracy on January 6 must be held accountable.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The groups Free Speech for People (FSFP) and Mi Familia Vota Education Fund have launched&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.nylas.com\/t1\/277\/1doe8qor3s6cmlf15c3fen0vx\/3\/15788e7a551fbbf7869469e5baf1887d58ab00380750682eff3b308d1e77c574\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TrumpIsDisqualified.org<\/a>, a campaign pressuring secretaries of state and other U.S. election officials to exclude supporters of the insurrection\u2014particularly the twice-impeached former president\u2014from any future ballots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the &#8220;Jan. 6th Justice: Our Freedoms, Our Votes&#8221;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/progressive-democrats-of-america-2659074000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">day of action<\/a>&nbsp;on Friday, Mi Familia Vota held a rally in Denver demanding that Democratic Colorado Secretary of State Jenna Griswold use her power to keep Trump\u2014who formally&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/11\/16\/democracy-not-out-woods-yet-trump-announces-2024-white-house-run\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">launched<\/a>&nbsp;his current presidential campaign in November\u2014off the ballot in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/MiFamiliaVota\/status\/1611394208425996288?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1611394208425996288%7Ctwgr%5E4a94412e85030397dffcca36eceb4152a7371899%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fjanuary-6-trump-2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Donald Trump violated his oath of office when he led the charge to overturn the results of the 2020 election,&#8221; declared&nbsp;<strong><\/strong>H\u00e9ctor S\u00e1nchez Barba, executive director and CEO of Mi Familia Vota, a national group that works to build Latino political power through civic participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;His actions only confirmed what the Latino community has long known: He is dangerous,&#8221; Sanchez said of Trump. &#8220;The disqualification clause in the 14th Amendment is clear: Anyone who violates their oath of office is ineligible to run for higher office in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Secretaries of state have the power to bar Trump,&#8221; he stressed. &#8220;There is ample evidence as to why he is not fit to hold office again, now all we are asking is for a secretary of state to act.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We believe that Trump is constitutionally ineligible for any future run for office bc of his role in inciting, encouraging, &amp; supporting the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Jan6?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Jan6<\/a> insurrection. After Trump announced his 2024 campaign, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/11\/18\/ag-merrick-garland-appoints-special-counsel-oversee-trump-probes\">appointed<\/a>&nbsp;Jack Smith, a longtime federal prosecutor, as a special counsel for those probes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FSFP legal director Ron Fein, president John Bonifaz, and chairman and senior legal adviser Ben Clements, jointly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurist.org\/commentary\/2023\/01\/merrick-garland-abandoned-prosecuting-trumps-pre-2020-crimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argued<\/a>&nbsp;Friday in a piece for&nbsp;<em>Jurist<\/em>&nbsp;that &#8220;Garland has done something quietly sneaky&#8221; with his appointment of Smith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/ronfein\/status\/1611402085420908554?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1611402085420908554%7Ctwgr%5E4a94412e85030397dffcca36eceb4152a7371899%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.commondreams.org%2Fnews%2Fjanuary-6-trump-2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;By announcing a special counsel appointment predicated on Trump&#8217;s candidacy,&#8221; the trio wrote, &#8220;then excluding from the special counsel&#8217;s scope the &#8216;shelf-ready&#8217; &#8216;obstruction of justice crimes already identified by Special Counsel [Robert] Mueller and campaign finance crimes already identified by Manhattan prosecutors (in the Trump administration, no less), Garland is telling us between the lines that that he is giving up on all of Trump&#8217;s pre-2020 crimes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Of course, Trump must be held accountable, in a timely fashion, for the crimes within the special counsel&#8217;s scope,&#8221; they added. &#8220;But Garland&#8217;s absolution of Trump&#8217;s earlier crimes\u2014and unwillingness to even state openly, let alone provide a rationale, that he was doing so\u2014is a serious blow to the once cherished principle that no one, not even the president, is above the law.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for other political leaders who contributed to the Capitol attack, although the select committee last month&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/12\/19\/time-prosecute-jan-6-panel-unanimously-refers-trump-doj-criminal-charges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">referred<\/a>&nbsp;Republican Congressmen Andy Biggs (Ariz.), Jim Jordan (Ohio), Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), and Scott Perry (R-Pa.) to the House Committee on Ethics for defying subpoenas, they are unlikely to face any consequences in a chamber narrowly controlled by the GOP, no matter who ultimately becomes speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The House adjourned Friday afternoon after 13 failed speaker votes throughout the week\u2014the most since&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/house-republicans-2659077348\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">before the U.S. Civil War<\/a>\u2014with plans to return at 10:00 pm ET. McCarthy just needs to flip two of the six Republicans who remain opposed to him\u2014Biggs along with Reps. Lauren Boebert (Colo.), Eli Crane (Ariz.), Matt Gaetz (Fla.), Bob Good (Va.), and Matt Rosendale (Mont.)\u2014to secure enough support to be elected to the leadership post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our work is licensed under Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0).
