Bernie Sanders. &#8220;We must end this corporate greed.&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/author\/kenny-stancil\">KENNY STANCIL<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jan 18, 2023  (CommonDreams.org)<a href=\"javascript:window.print();\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 40% of people in the United States said they or a family member delayed medical care last year due to the prohibitively high cost of treatment under the nation&#8217;s for-profit healthcare model,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/468053\/record-high-put-off-medical-care-due-cost-2022.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a>&nbsp;a Gallup survey published Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As U.S. residents faced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/article\/health-insurance-costs-are-squeezing-workers-and-employers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">soaring prices<\/a>&nbsp;for private insurance, the percentage of them forgoing medical services as a result of the costs climbed 12 points in one year, from 26% in 2021 to 38% in 2022. Of those who reported postponing treatment last year, 27% said they or a family member did so &#8220;for a very or somewhat serious condition,&#8221; up nine points from the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;After health insurance companies raised prices 24% last year and made nearly $12 billion in profits last quarter, 38% of Americans now report they or a family member put off needed medical care because it was too expensive,&#8221; Sen. We need Medicare for All.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gallup has been collecting self-reported data on this issue since 2001. The firm&#8217;s latest annual healthcare poll, conducted from November 9 to December 2, found the highest level of cost-related delays in seeking medical care on record, topping the previous high of 33% (2019 and 2014) by five points and marking the sharpest annual increase to date. The proportion of people who said they or a family member postponed treatment for a serious condition in 2022 (27%) also surpassed the previous all-time high of 25% (2019).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The number was up 12 points from 2021.<br><br>27% said the delayed medical treatment &quot;was for a very or somewhat serious condition.&quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tlcR97pdbe\">https:\/\/t.co\/tlcR97pdbe<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zmwEth4bAW\">pic.twitter.com\/zmwEth4bAW<\/a><\/p>&mdash; More Perfect Union (@MorePerfectUS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MorePerfectUS\/status\/1615403918753660952?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 17, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lower-income households, young adults, and women in the U.S. are especially likely to have postponed medical care due to high costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Gallup:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>In 2022, Americans with an annual household income under $40,000 were nearly twice as likely as those with an income of $100,000 or more to say someone in their family delayed medical care for a serious condition (34% vs. 18%, respectively). Those with an income between $40,000 and less than $100,000 were similar to those in the lowest income group when it comes to postponing care, with 29% doing so.<\/p><p>Reports of putting off care for a serious condition are up 12 points among lower-income U.S. adults, up 11 points among those in the middle-income group, and up seven points among those with a higher income. The latest readings for the middle- and upper-income groups are the highest on record or tied with the highest.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Another recent survey&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/09\/12\/just-12-americans-think-us-healthcare-system-runs-very-or-extremely-well\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a>&nbsp;that just 12% of Americans think healthcare in the U.S. is handled &#8220;extremely&#8221; or &#8220;very&#8221; well. Such data provides further evidence of the unpopularity of a profit-maximizing system that has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealthfund.org\/publications\/issue-briefs\/2022\/sep\/state-us-health-insurance-2022-biennial-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">left<\/a>&nbsp;43 million people inadequately insured,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2020\/05\/14\/we-need-single-payer-yesterday-medicare-all-case-made-162-million-lose-employer-tied\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">kicked<\/a>&nbsp;millions off of their employer-based plans when the coronavirus caused a spike in unemployment, and contributed to the country&#8217;s startling&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/08\/31\/pandemic-profit-driven-healthcare-system-blamed-historic-decline-us-life-expectancy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decline in life expectancy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, prior to the publication of Gallup&#8217;s poll, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) wrote on social media: &#8220;If you don\u2019t believe corporate greed has deadly consequences, take a look at the decline in American life expectancy. We need Medicare for All, and we must raise the minimum wage.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If you don\u2019t believe corporate greed has deadly consequences, take a look at the decline in American life expectancy. We need <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MedicareForAll?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MedicareForAll<\/a>, and we must raise the minimum wage. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/haY3CFEQGt\">pic.twitter.com\/haY3CFEQGt<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Ro Khanna (@RoKhanna) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RoKhanna\/status\/1613188733477470208?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 11, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the current, profit-driven U.S. healthcare system\u2014which forces millions to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/09\/09\/nearly-18-million-us-adults-couldnt-afford-prescription-medication-year-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">skip treatments<\/a>&nbsp;to avoid financial ruin and allows the pharmaceutical and insurance industries to rake in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/07\/13\/big-pharma-has-spent-147-million-kill-lower-drug-prices-during-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">massive profits<\/a>\u2014is deeply&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2021\/08\/04\/time-medicare-all-us-healthcare-system-ranks-dead-last-among-rich-nations-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inefficient<\/a>&nbsp;and unpopular, polling has consistently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2020\/11\/06\/centrist-house-democrats-attack-medicare-all-fox-news-poll-shows-72-voters-want\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shown<\/a>&nbsp;that voters want the federal government to play a more active role in healthcare provision, with a majority expressing support for a publicly run insurance plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent research shows that a single-payer system of the kind proposed in Medicare for All legislation&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/05\/12\/realistic-humane-and-just-choice-sanders-unveils-medicare-all-act-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">introduced<\/a>&nbsp;by Sanders and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/02\/06\/movement-grows-jayapal-heralds-record-120-medicare-all-co-sponsors\">Rep. Pramila&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/02\/06\/movement-grows-jayapal-heralds-record-120-medicare-all-co-sponsors\">Jayapal<\/a>&nbsp;(D-Wash.) could have prevented&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2022\/06\/14\/medicare-all-could-have-prevented-more-338000-us-covid-deaths-study\">hundreds of thousands<\/a>&nbsp;of Covid-19 deaths in the U.S. over the past two and a half years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only would a single-payer insurance program guarantee coverage for every person in the country, but it would also reduce overall healthcare spending nationwide by an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/2020\/12\/11\/seems-good-policy-cbo-shows-medicare-all-could-cover-everyone-650-billion-less-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">estimated<\/a>&nbsp;$650 billion per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Millions of Americans across this country are avoiding seeking lifesaving medical care because they&#8217;re afraid it will bankrupt them,&#8221; Khanna, a universal healthcare advocate,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RoKhanna\/status\/1614277533062635521\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tweeted<\/a>&nbsp;last week. &#8220;In many cases, their fears are well-founded.
